Does anyone have any experience of volunteering with their local BHS? Im thinking of putting myself forward as there are vacancies for the Cheshire area.

If you do volunteer, what role do you do and what do you think about it?

I volunteered and trained as a welfare officer, as there were shortages in my area, and I've passed a few BHS Stages, and always been a member.
I went to Stoneleigh and did a day's training, and didn't claim the travel expenses as it's a charity with worthwhile aims.
But my region (Glos) didn't contact me ever...as I hadn't met the district chief chappie.
From my experience, I wouldn't advise it, as unless you're friends with/related to/sleeping with someone on the committee for your district, they don't want your help.

I was secretary for our local area and it was a great way to meet people and keep in touch with the horsey goings on. Committe were very friendly but gave up in the end as fed up with being dictated to by Stoneleigh who are so far behind the times but have too much control over each region.

Oh dear. Not like our Committee at all. We are all very nice, and very hard working and put on a lovely programme and gets lots of enthusiastic people.

We don't gossip much, as we are not taking part in dressage, Pony Club, or Eventing and we don't all hunt with the same pack, if any, so all we talk about are BHS things, like Access, Riding and Road Safety, fund raising, providing an interesting programme for the members.

There has been a new broom sweeping through Stoneleigh so things are improving.

Shilasdair - did anyone from the Glos committee know that you had trained? Did you ring up the Chairman?

People don't usually turn down keen people if they know about them, they are welcomed with open arms.
