Does anyone work at a dog rescue?

I’m transitioning from freelance horses too office work, it’s at home and after the first week which was admittedly slower than it will be I see there is a fair bit I could do in the evening. That’s what I’d hoped! 🤞
So I aim to do a few early mornings and afternoons at a lovely little livery yard I’ve been at for a while anyway but figured I could maybe spare a morning or afternoon to volunteer perhaps. My love is dogs. I’d wondered if there is any need at rescue type places for someone to walk, clean, play or even just spend time with the dogs waiting to be homed?
I’m no correct trainer or anything by any means but have a genuine love and am happy to pick up poo!
Is it something worth looking into?
Do charities have very part time unqualified people?

It’s always worth asking, will depend on the charity though. Not all have kennels as such, many have dogs in foster homes which gives a better idea of the best type of long term home for them. Lots of rescues look for volunteer home checkers or dog assessors. If you have a particular favourite breed you could have a look on there website and see how they manage their rescue. Other organisations like the cinnamon trust are frequently looking for dog walkers so maybe contact them as well, hope you find somewhere.

I don’t have a favourite breed really no, maybe labs, we are a lab family officially but I have a huge soft spot for little dogs, I’m also a massive fan of rotties, staffs and Danes (mixed bag? 😂) There is a Blue cross really quite close though and Cheltenham which is about 40 minutes away has a rescue place.
I *think there’s also a wildlife rescue not too far away but that’s probably a bit more specialised. I’d do that gladly but love the idea of just giving attention and cuddles to animals that need it.
My little gang thrive on attention and it makes me sad to think not all dogs get it.

Our local greyhound rescue has volunteer walkers.
I imagine being close to Swindon that has a big racing circuit we probably have one close. I’ll Google that. Thanks :)

Nb I actually know nothing about dog racing, that may be like someone living near a tiny flat track saying likening it to Cheltenham 🤷‍♀️

I believe there is a Swindon branch of the Greyhound Trust :)

Definitely worth looking into! I wasn't on the dog squad during my volunteering time but picked up a shift sometimes with walkies. There is always something that needs doing!

You'll get sucked in though until you're less part-time than you're intending 😉

Vale Wildlife Centre in Tewkesbury maybe? I live in FoD so have them in my mind in case I ever come across a wildlife casualty! They do use volunteers but sounds like they prefer if you can commit to regular slots - https://www.valewildlife.org.uk/volunteering/ They sound amazing, I'd love to do one of their 'working holidays'.
