Not take a lead when walking their dog in a public place?

Met a couple with an OES today on the beach, no lead at all, so they had to hold the dog by the scruff of the neck as we passed each other.
This is after we had to wave away an off-lead labrador that came bombing towards us at high speed, owner off miles away.

Just thought it was a bit strange.
On the one or two occasions we have ever forgotten a lead, we have just gone home again.

The walk ended on a hilarious note when we we met a couple with a tiny JRT who started barking his head off at us. Instead of his usual whining, squealing and jumping up and down, the boy just stared at him and kept looking back at me, seeming to say 'what the hell?! That's my line!'
 
Hmmm....Amber is very well trained and will walk to heel when called...though tbh we don't normally take her to public places. When we go to the beach she starts off on the lead, but then we let her off....it's a deserted beach anyway. Always on a lead at places like Badminton.

Would always take one with us though....or there's usually a lead rope kicking about in the car.
 
Always have a lead with me. I also carry a spare rope lead in the glove compartment of the car in case of emergencies, have had to use it more than once to help out people who haven't got leads with them.
 
When I take my dog round the woods he does'nt need to be on a lead but I ALWAYS take one just incase.

Unlike the stupid couple i met the other day who were walking a German Shepard, labrador and Staffie without leads and they were uncontrolable. I was so p!ssed off as I had to do most my walk with mine on a lead because they could'nt control theirs!! Muppets.

Then again they were walking with shoes on when the paths are very muddy so obviously common sense evaded them altogether!

I always bring the lead but id let the mutt off if there was no one else on the beach...a leads sort of essential in our case tho..my lab seems to have a vendetta against small dogs theres been some intresting situations when we meet off lead terriers..but the owner usually comes runnin when they see see jess start to poff and snarl...theres been a few cases where they gave out to me about my"vicious" dog but usually a quiet reminder that my dog is the one under control and there one came over to us they shut up fairly quickly...
So ya i always bring my lead i mite meet somone else with a dog like mine!

my dogs grand with people thats why shes not mussled when were walking its just small dogs she has issues with..
 
Well the reason why I don't let mine off in public is because I've had years of nothing short of abuse from members of the public about my dogs purely because of their breed.

If my two had behaved the way the OES and Labrador did today there would have been letters to the paper, people shouting at me, etc.

Yes, my boy does hoon about a bit and squeal because he wants to socialise with other dogs but since my childhood I've had 'can you go and walk somewhere else, my friend is scared of Alsatians' 'your dog is vicious' 'it must bite' 'those dogs are killers' etc etc etc.

When I was a kid I was reduced to tears in the street because someone said my old girl (who was about ten at the time and I could walk her easily, I'm not big) shouldn't be out in public and was dangerous.
Kids in my street even used to try and goad her and taunt her into reacting (she never did) so I am loath to let my dogs off the lead in public, they get so much stick from other people when they are ON the lead!
