I own a Criollo and have done so for nearly 7 years. He was imported via Italy so has an Italian passport. I confess that I have never sent it off to get my name and Address officially put on but now that we want to compete in a competition abroad I feel I should get it done. There is no previous owner on it as the dealer never entered her details. Has anyone on here sent a passport back to Italy? I'm concerned that I may never see it again! Also I assume there would be a charge as in the UK?

I would prefer to get a UK passport but I gather I can't do that while he has a valid European one.

If the passport was lost or stolen would you have recourse to get an UK one? Likewise if you'd sent it off and heard nothing?
I must confess I have never seen an italian horse passport in my life. However the italians are somewhat reknowned for hashing paperwork so following steps to get an UK one might be best.

The situation of passports has greatly improved here in recent years. It may as bakewell says, be easier to get a uk passport but if I can be any help from this end.. Changes of ownership apart from racehorses, is done by a society called APA, is there any indication of atleast the region your horse was from?

The stamp on the front of the passport says it was done in Fossano (CN). I assume it is somewhere near a port as the horses were shipped in from South America and then came by lorry to the UK.

On the BHS website it says:

If your horse already has an official EU passport then you must not apply for another passport.

Cuneo is fairly inland, if you may not apply for another passport then the Italian is, I presume, valid. If you want to pm me and send me a pic of the passport I can easily make a few phone calls for you.

Send it to the British Equestrian Federation at Kenilworth, they will change the ownership for you for approx £25. Bargain!

VickyP if I don't have any luck with the BEF, I will take you up on your offer. Many thanks.
