Does Blue Chip orginial really work???? And Keratex Hoof hardner???

I have an Arab gelding and was wondering if it is worth feeding Blue Chip as an overall supplement? My horse is a good doer so im worried it might make him fat as it says it is good for underweight horses? But I do want him to to be in tip top condition can anyone give me any advice???
Also has anyone tried keratex hoof hardner as my boy is barefoot?? any replys welcome

What you want to add to your horse's diet depends to an extent on wha tyou are planning on doing with him this summer.
Keratex does work, but long term use can make the hoof brittle, and using it blocks the effects of hoof oil or other treatments, so it is very much an either/or
 
We last used blue chip about 6 years ago as supplement and didn't notice any difference, so don't use it.
Sware by keratex for my horse who loses his shoes so easy in the summer, didn't lose a single one last summer!!!!
 
Thanks for replying, I will just be hacking ans schooling and getting him fit as he has been out of work, Just wanted a supplement for his coat, topline and hooves etc just genral good health any suggestions?
Any suggestions for water based hoof treatments as i heard they are better than oil??

If your horse isn't getting the full recommended amount of any premixed feed, then adding a daily multivit/mineral plus sunflower oil may be a slightly more economical way of improving condition - although Blue Chip will probably have the same effect
 
I have a Hann x TB show jumper & Blue Chip works for him. Feeding that in conjunction with good schooling he has a lovely build, topline, muscle tone & shine to his coat.

I've not used Kerratex for a long time, I use Kevin Bacon's hoof oil which is great stuff. The majority of Farriers around our area recommend it. My lad has never had hoof problems with using it.

Blue chip didnt work for me, but swore by Keratex in Cyprus as the ground is so hard and farriers so poor. Kept my lads feet just right. Dont use it as much now in Germany but i think it was because i looked after his feet so well in Cyprus! Well untill he stood on a nail but thats another story...
 
I use the Keratex hoof range, rather than just one product. I use the hoof hardener during the summer and if shoes are newly off (on walls and soles). And use the Keratex varnish in the wet winter months - it stops too much water going into the hoof wall and making shoes pull off easily. 'Twas the difference between my old boy having 3 shoes and 4 -he had 1 white hoof which was really poor for years, until I started up the above regime. My farrier now recommends this regime as he was sooo impressed with the effect. I have never seen any evidence of it making the hooves brittle over a 10 year span?

I really like blue chip; my horses look great on the original and have now switched them to Pro.
I would never use Keratex as Formaldehyde is one of the main components. I always try to improve their feet from the inside out - the bluechip helps with this.
 
If you read the instructions properly, keratex hoof hardner should only be used on the sole and the walking surface of the horn no further up than 1/2" up the outside of the hoof..
It cannot make the hooves "brittle" as they grow down from the top.

If you paint it all over the hoof horn (expensive) it will make it hard - but the only bit you want to treat is the bit that touches the ground and just above!
 
Blue chip original really worked for my IDxTB in poor condition after a persistent virus last year, and not only that it helped his hooves and his mane and tail grew like stink! And coat less scurfy too...

Keratex hasnt really helped. but hasnt done any harm except in pocket :-))
