Does Bute cause bad temper?

Anyone had experience of a horse being bad tempered on Bute? He isnt lame enough to be in enough pain to cause him to behave like this. He is still getting normal routine ie turnout hayalge etc just no real exercise.
 
ive heard people saying theyve had changes in their horse when on bute, there was a horse at my yard who was quite moody when he was on it. im sure ive read somewhere it can sometimes irritate their stomach, dont quote me on that cos im not 100%, ive neve has any bad experiences with it though!

I believe it can irritate stomach lining like the previous poster said. Also just because a horse isn't 'that lame' doesn't mean that he wont have other issues going on that you are unaware of, i.e. over compensatory issues in muscles/tendons of opposite limbs. I'd get the physio to have a look and give him a good check out just to be on the safe side.

Sounds like he is in pain somewhere.
 
How much bute is he on? It can cause stomach irritation over time, but I don't think it's common in the short term. Danilon is gentler on the stomach, maybe you could swap to that?

Not all horses do well on haylage, the acidity levels in the gut can be become too high. Maybe the haylage and the bute together are causing a problem. Do you feed a haylage balancer?
 
funny you should say this...I have been thinking this happens to my mare...she gets grumpy when she is on regular bute. Maybe it is becuase it irritates her tummy - she gets touchy around her belly...its difficult to say cos she is a temperamental mare anyway!!!
i have now taken her off it for ht time being - she has a supplement which is fantastic and she cant be without but I have tried herbal no bute remedies before and I dont think they really worked as well tbh.
she seems happier off it at the moment...and actually seems to be moving a lot better!
Glad it wasnt just me having this strange thought...other people have not really known what to say to me when Ive mentioned it!

I agree with this regarding haylage - hay is much better!
