of dam/sires show through in the foal??

sorry if that's a totally silly question...

Someone I know is putting a dangerous mare into foal....would this affect the foal's personality, or does that form through the way it's brought up etc...

I just keep hearing stuff about it, and was wondering if there's any truth to it?

hmmm, tricky one... I knew of a TB stallion who passed his 'iffy' temperament on to his baby, but I also believe that had a lot to do with the foals initial handling. Said mare is definately her fathers daughter. I think both Parents temperament counts for a lot to a prospective purchaser of a foal...

They do believe that the foal is more likely to assume the dam's characteristics than the sires...because the foal spends time with the dam copying her behaviours (obviously the genes are 50% from sire and dam.
Temperament IME is very likely to be a heritable trait...I'd never breed from something with a dodgy temperament, soundness issues etc.
