Does everyone have a 4x4? How are you getting to the yard?

I live down south, so today is the only day that I have been snowed in. I have a tiny little sports car that doesn't do snow or ice! Luckily friend in 4x4 is taking me to see my horse this afternoon.

I am seriously thinking of swapping for a 4x4 as snow seems to be an every year occurence! And lets face it, summer is hardly long enough for a convertible!

What do you guys all drive?
 
I have an Astra which got me through all the awful weather last year and I live in the middle of nowhere. So far this year she has coped as well but looking at the amount out there now I am hoping I can get her to her MOT at 11am! She got to the yard early this morning but it has been snowing really heavily since I got back :(
 
I used to have a merc slk so I know your pain! I live up a lane and a track and the little sports car just was not practical enough, I would slide just going through a puddle or a tiny bit of dirt!
I sold it and brought a Jeep Cherokee for the winter and a little sporty corsa for the summer. The Jeep is too expensive to run all year round but it's an absolute godsend in this weather! Saying that it is so bad up my track and down my lane at the moment that even my Jeep is struggling a bit and we have to take a shovel just in case lol!

I have a jeep, and im soo glad. The weather here as been awful, a lot of people on our yard are struggling to get there in normal cars. The problem is more the fact of the amount of snow we have had rather than a difficult location.
 
i have a freelander and we had such big snow drifts i couldnt even get out in that so had to walk to horse - my legs are feeling it now. partner brought hes tractor home last night as snow was so bad lol
im going to invest in a tractor for myself lol
 
Well I'm a bit spoilt, first of all my horses are at the end of the garden path and secondly got both a Defender and a Discovery. I'm going on a shopping trip for half the neighbourhood once I've mucked out. The one thing I don't have is any wellies or long boots though :eek: so that's something I need to get rather urgently!
 
I`ve got a peugeot 206 convertible..... will never ever buy a Peugeot again...worst cars ever! In februarys snow everyone on the yard got in and out fine but oh no even though I was going in a completely straight line, my car decided to go sideways down the drive and then refused to move for the rest of the day!:mad:
Am doing very well this wnter though as there is no snow ...... :D

OP there are some nifty little things for tyres called Autosocks which look quite good.... I`m thinking they may tide me over until I buy a 4x4, well thats if I ever get any snow!!!!
 
intrersting thread i was going to ask mr claus for a 4x4 :) are you all getting out and about with your 4x4 s it s going to be a long hard winter
 
I have a Citroen C2 and its been a tank in this weather, couldn't fault it.

Only small problem its had is on my drive getting over the 2ft of snow!
 
I've got a Toyota Rav4 (they are always in 4wd) it's been fab in the snow but I haven't attempted to move it yet as we have had over 10 inches in the night! They are no good at towing though).

Have just removed 1ft of snow off the driveway. Neighbour next door but one has a Toyota Land Cruiser (huge tank) and he goes everywhere with it. Another neighbour has a Audi (large saloon car don't know what model) which is 4wd.

I gave my neds double large haynets last night with extra hard feed and will attempt to go out to get to the yard at midday. Fingers and toes crossed.
 
well never buy a corsa...my car sucks OH didnt believe me so tried to dig it out and drive it to top of hill for me tomorrow and it just decided it was going to stop halfway and only go sideways or back down!! So yesterday I walked to yard but man i ached in the evening, so today im walking to the nearest bus stop and getting the bus to main road which is only about 15min walk from yard!
4x4 is defo on my xmas list!!
 
I have a VW polo which has generally been pretty dam good in the snow, however today am not risking it. Yard does the horses weekdays anyway fortunetly.
 
we have an 03 defender for sale any takers bedford area, also got x trail and isuzu denver but only any good if remember to push 4 wheel drive button.

What are they like with fuel? I really want one, I`m not interested in towing as am going to get a box, just want something smart that can also handle snow and ice but is not OTT on the juice because my car is crap on juice!
 
my ssangyong rexton with all terrains is finding our dump of snow (19" and counting now) easy - none of our local roads are gritted - all just tractor snow ploughed or not ploughed at all
alas it means no snow days off for me - my 20mile comute is all on compacted snow but its goign no bother - even managed a trip to feed merchants and back with 10 bags of feed in the back!!
 
We have an astra and altho it has never failed us we now have snow upto the top of the wheels and just can't get out of the street :( it's now day 2 of not been able to get to see rose, and it's snowing yet again. I am very fortunate that she is being very well looked after by the yard owner as I'm the only livery so a huge thankyou to them
 
If you want a sports car and something you can drive in the snow/ice/wet, get yourself an Audi TT with quattro (4 wheel drive). This is what I have, and I live in a rural area with steep hills, and it has never let me down. It is nice sailing past cars that are floundering at the bottom of hills.....!!! You can pick a decent Mk1 TT up now for around £5-6000.
Other cars that are good are the VW golf with 4motion (4 wheel drive) and any of the Audi quattro range - God I sound like a saleman!! I have had my Audi for nearly 4 years, and I feel very safe in it.
 
They are amazing!!! Its a little trooper - the problem is, if you cant exercise some common sense, you'll come unstuck with any car...

Which was perfectly shown by a 4x4 that I saw stuck in a hedge as I tottled past in my tinky car :p
 
I have a fiesta. Its usually ok but yesterday got properly stuck going up a very slight slope and had to be pushed round to turn back!! So today with the snow being even worse i will be walking to the yard, usually about 20 min walk but with all this snow plus my 7 year old in tow i fear there it may take rather longer. Yard owner has hayed and watered for me this morning, i am planning to go up late morning and muck out, groom, make up feeds and faff about a bit then come home early afternoon. Planning to ask YO to put in evening hay and feeds for me so I can avoid another hike in the dark later so fingers crossed she doesnt mind...
 
Up until a month ago I had a mini cooper convertible which I loved.

Was tossing up a big 4x4 but couldn't quite get my head around never having a soft top. So I traded in for an Audi Convertible last month - which is also a quattro which is 4x4; it's an all weathers car!

Mines a 2 litre 5 door manual petrol and put £40 of fuel in a week (7 days) and do approx 230 miles.

I was provided a 2010 Mecedes M 325 automatic (3 litre tank)- whilst my Rav was having a new rear wing as someone ran in the back of me and the dealership failed 3 times in rectifying the problem. The Mecedes was costing me a minimum of £12 a day as I do short journeys. It was a desiel.

Last year I made it to the yard on ungritted roads in my 558cc Smart Car! Today I have been to the yard in my Citroen C1 - lots of snow today but it was ok.
 
I have a Disco and have found it great.

When we had snow earlier this year I was transporting all my neighbors around and also helping my local GP surgery getting the District nurses out on their rounds.

We also have a BMW X5 again great in this weather, but the BMW salon is hopeless in snow.

Sensable careful driving is what you need in bad weather.

It is also sensible to keep the vehicle in good working order. I know fuel is not cheap these days but keep the tank at least 3/4 full.

Went to do my lot and they were loving the snow.

Yep - totally agree. OH has an S4 Cab Quattro, but we also have a Disco which he says is the most complete car he's driven.

4x4's (proper ones) are generally built for all terrain and weathers, but like everyone else has said, you still have to drive sensibly. Otherwise you still end up sideways in a ditch, just in a bigger car!
 
I don't have a 4x4 and drove to the stables today. Knew as soon as started going down the hill was never going to get back up. My YO doesn't seem to have a problem though as she doesn't have a 4x4 either. So my car is just crap and stuck at the stables. Unfortunately my kids are at school so need to somehow free the car later to pick them up. Def trading in for a 4x4 next year.
 
We don’t have any hills here so my Audi and mums van seem to be getting around fine even though the lanes have been covered in compacted ice/snow since Saturday. I’m from hilly place but moved to a non hilly place a couple of years ago – I’m amazed how much easier it is to get around with no hills!!
