Does everyone have a 4x4? How are you getting to the yard?

I have a Corsa- Last winter it was fine on straight roadds but any sight hill I couldnt get up. As we have only had a few inches its been fab.

Mum has a Peugeot 206 and a Jeep, Peugeot last year was fantastic, never skidded, got up every hill, really deep snow.
Mum took jeep out the first day we had snow and nearly skidded into the school fence. She said unless its deep snow she'll be sticking to the Peugeot.

I have a land rover which is obviously great in it, but it's terrifying when that slides!

having said that, my little rover (aka the shed on wheels!) has coped amazingly well in the past, and my volvos proving to be pretty good in it too!

i have a clio and it is rotten in the snow however with some very skillful driving skills lol hahaha i am managing to drive the 19miles to the yard, with the hardest bits being getting out of our street (stay a bottom of a hil in a cul-de-sac need to go up hil to get out) and the road from our house to main road. Our YO's OH has a snow plough and has cleared the access road so its actually better than our street!

I have a vauxhall frontera for towing trailer which is great in the snow but my OH has pinched it this week as he starts at 5am so needs to drive on untreated roads so he gets the good car

I have a Clio - it's ok once you can get it out of the deep snow but I'm not going anywhere today.

Horses are kept at my Grandmothers. I can't stay there as I've got animals here too but I'm lucky that my mum can stay there with her dog so I don't have to worry.

She got stuck at the yard for 9 days earlier this year. I'm unlikely to gert my little car out today but hoping to be able to make it tomorrow.

Sadly I can't go and play as have plenty of work to do from home :(!

I have a ford KA ;) its amazing what you can do with a little common sense!!!

Trouble is, if a 4 x 4 does slide into you you'll come off a damn sight worse. My little Ibiza had a mishap involving a Freelander - the Freelander's fine, my car is not. :( :p

Its made my OH finally insure me on his Disco though so no worries, lol. BTW I used to have a Clio which was fab on ice, the Ibiza's rubbish.

i'm not risking going out today as horses are in a valley so even if i make it down the hill theres a big risk i won't get out again. Luckily somebody who lives there is doing them for us, otherwise don't know what i'd do. my mums got 4x4 but even shes not risking it

I've got a Toyota Surf (basically a Hilux with an estate body, not a pick up). It's fab! I do actually use it off road, and use the extra boot space, so it does get used at a 4x4 all year round. Got all terrain tyres on it too, and it didn't even notice the snow this morning. Well, except for the really sharp bend on a steep slope, I did actually manage to slide it. Put it into 4WD after that and had no problems!

Was driving a Corsa last year and it was fantastic. All the corners, the hills, etc, no problem. Depth of snow was a bit of an issue, I kept getting it beached and made OH dig me out :D

My OH works away and has a Toyota Auris commuter car, I drive Nissan X-Trail... my brilliant idea on Monday was to give him the Nissan so he safely makes it the 85 miles to work, leaving myself with the tea-tray mobile:o It was doing OK, slippery is not an issue as I'm used to driving in snow/ice and the car handles really well, but I can't get it out of the yard now as the snow reaches half way up the door:eek:
Serves me right for being charitable! Luckily, I have expected it to snow heavily and bought enough supplies to see me through to the weekend, so the Toyota can stay where it is.
The only thing is, it's still snowing :o

exactly the freelander is fine but the car isnt! thats what scares me most about driving in the clio!

think it doesnt help that my clio have low profile tyres (sports model) so close to the ground and the wheel arches just fill with snow!

BMW Z4 rear wheel drive so no way its going anywhere which is VERY annoying. Ive been considering a 4 by 4 . My TT was fab a couple o years back. Our yard manager made it thankfully in her astra. But there is no chance I can get to my boy who was due schooled today :(
I know a few people who have invested in snow chains for their cars I may be going in one 2day if they work lol

My little Seat Ibiza Cupra sport was truly evil in snow...

This year I changed my car and now have a diesel astra van- OMG it's ace in the snow and even fabbier for my horsey lifestyle...

I can get all the feed in the back, rugs etc AND my tack.. no problem.. I can even go people food shopping and fit that in too !

Best thing I've done in ages and I should have done it sooner :D

I live in a residential road on a hill which is never gritted, salted or ploughed, the car was buried under 10" of snow this morning, so I walked to my horse.

I set off at 4.30, walked through the town and on to the village where he's liveried, getting there about 6.15. I was amazed at how little time it took me and in the end I had to slow down because I was going to get there too early and disturb everyone!

It was not an unpleasant walk all by myself though I wouldn't want to do it often!

I swapped my Porsche Caymen S for a Range Rover Sport HSE when I bought my horse, (bit traumatic at the time!) but I am SO pleased I did. It's amazing in this weather.

Hee hee whoever mentioned the peugeot CC - I used to have one, fab car in the sun with the roof down but just like a sledge on snow and ice!

I did have a suzuki Vitara (new shape) last year and it was absolutely fantastic in the worst conditions thanks to the low and high ratio gearbox. However, i bought a house so had to get something that cost me a little les a month (was on finance). I traded down to a Fiat Sedici which is the same as a Suzuki SX4 so is 2WD for normal road driving, has optional auto 4x4 so chooses to go to 4WD if needs be and also locked 4WD when required. It has proved to be fab in this weather and is much less to fun tax and fuel wise than my Vitara. I still would like to get another Vitara down the line as for the car size and money they are miles better in these conditions than other SUV/MPVs.

I have a Honda Civic with low profile tyres and had no problems this morning in the Forest on ungritted roads.

Personally i wouldn't get a 4x4 as they generally have standard road tyres on anyway so the grip is the same as a normal car. The only way to get better grip on the roads in these conditions in winter tyres or snow chains!

I have a disco with, what looks like tractor tyres on, its good in the snow and ice, but unfortunatly its not so good getting past abanded cars on the hill :-(

Im very spoilt, I have sports car as a summer run around (he's my baby I couldnt sell-had him years!) I have a Narvara truck which is a godsend - dogs, towing etc, a Volvo - company car and a jag hubby's car. Im not rich and dont have enough room on the drive:D A car for every season:D
I will say though, the Volvo (V50) is amazing in this weather!

well i usually get to the yard at 7pm after work during the week but haven't been able to get there since sunday :( the petrol cap on my old car is frozen and cannot turn the key to open it so could not fill up last night and tank is nearly on empty! hopefully will have better luck tonight!
we also have a bmw 1 series convertible, but i have been assured by OH that i cannot use that as its rear wheel drive and no good with ice on country lanes!!

Elderly rover. No probs so far, even though my road had a mirror like finish last night on the way home from the yard. I think my speed averaged at about 7mph!!

Little tip, use a lighter or somethign to heat up the key, my cap tends to freeze and this is how i get it to work. Common and sense and dont use a lighter near the cap though lol

I have a driving licence for a manual car. I currently have an automatic car as I just prefer them. However my car is not great to drive in this weather. I also have been thinking of getting a 4x4 as I work in the community and it has been difficult in this snow. I abandoned it yesterday and walked home. Does anybody have any experience of driving automatic 4x4's and are they still as good as a manual one in this weather?

I have a horrible Daewoo Chevrolet (sp?) I hate it, it's ugly! But we have had terrible snow and I have managed to get to the yard and do everything else I needed. We have had really bad snow for the last week and i have skidded slightly once and got stuck outside my house but with a push I was fine.
Other than that it's been fab, unfortunatley! Would love to use the exuse of it being terrible in the snow to get a new car haha

Aro - mine's an auto. I don't think they're AS good as a manual, but so far no problems. Make sure you get one with a high and low range box though - I haven't had to use low on mine, but I reckon it would do the trick on steep hills :)
