After assessing my horses weight i have decided that he is not fat but seems to have a grass belly/bloat, only no one seems to talk about this anymore.

He has no fat ridge over his neck or rump, you can't quite see his ribs but can feel them and admittedly doesn't get worked enough at the mo but i was wondering if this is a true thing or not?

Mine gets a grass belly - it mostly went away when I added brewer's yeast to his diet then went away completely when I added a Protexin gut balancing supplement. I assume it was more of a gassy belly.

Up here it is still mentioned as is hay belly in winter.
Certainly looking at pictures of horses a few months ago, you could see they were very lean and yet still had the grass/hay belly.

Obviously, if your able to work him more then this should reduce :) My ponies had to go on lusher grass this weekend due to their paddocks being used as show rings and the difference in my ponies girth is dramatic. Within a few days of hard work, it will soon reduce again so to me, yes it is true.

Chestnut Cob - that's interesting. Actually (before I put her on the grass), I did notice she was more gassy than the others. Do you know which supplement it is your using?

Thanks, hopefully i will get him into more work, although he's a WB he certainly is a 'good doer' and kept weight on really well after living out last year. I guess it could be gas as well, after all his belly rumbles like mad with digesting the grass!

My mare has been out of work due to an injury to a ligament and she is disgusting! She has a huge belly, but you can see her ribs and she has no fat pads or crests or anything. I had the vet out to do other horses teeth and I mentoned that I was worried about her being overweight (even though she is in a tiny paddock with no grass at all!) and he said not to worry about her because it was just a grass belly. I think she looks dreadful though but I obviously can't work her
