Hello!

Can't believe how cold it is today, it was 5 degrees first thing this morning by us...should our horse have his fleece on or should I still put it off for as long as possible?

He's in at night and has a full coat...

I know I should leave it as late as possible so they feel the benefit but still not sure what to do!

Thank you

Are you riding him?

My competition horses are rugged up to the eyeballs with fleeces during the day and 200 -300g rugs at night when they are out.

I have found I can keep the coat thinner and it makes my blades last longer to discourage the heavy furry growth!

My non-ridden heard are all still out 24/7 naked. One old boy will be rugged if weather turns nasty, but don't want to take rugs on and off so will wait until weather is much worse

Is he cold? If he is, sling a blanket on him, if not save yourself the work.

ps, 5C isn't really that cold.

(I'm actually saying that to try to convince myself, because by April when it's 5C I'm out in a teeshirt. I reckon 5C in Fall is colder than 5C in Spring

Toto is in work, and VERY fluffy, rode him for about 20 mins today, and he was getting clammy already! Up until now he's not had any rugs, he gets sweaty in a fleece at night! Was gonna put a summer sheet on him tonight, but his ears were warm, he felt warm and I think he'd have been too hot. He's being clipped tomorrow, thank goodness!

Thanks guys, I ended up putting a fleece on him...think it was the right thing to do cos he was cold! and he didn't end up sweaty either which is good!

Thanks for your replies!!
