Does it annoy you?

I have a slit ear bridle with silver all over it - I hate it! I'm not into fancy tack though. The silver is a pain to keep clean and it is quite soft so can dent easily. You want to search eBay and look for "silver headstall".

A lady near to us brings genuine Criollo horses over from argentina. They are broken and used in ranches, then she brings them over here, and occasionally sells them on. They know their job, and having done the work they have are responsive and genuinley happy horses. I hope to be able to have some lessons at some point and then might well look into getting a QH or Criollo.
 
Oh either of those breeds are nice - an import is the way to go though. You wouldn't regret it....they are just soooo laid back and nothing at all bothers them.

I have to pop off for a bit - emma69 has just called to say she is on her way here and I need to vacuum her bedroom and put the clean bedding on. Party weekend!!!

i`m not a bling person,but there is something about fancy western tack that i find calling to me!`buy me`
my tackroom is clean and tidy and my tack too as i value it highly,even though a lot is secondhand.
always liked fancy western stuff but would go for the plain one on reflection.
how is the tack cared for?

saw a small quality one once with lovery patterns tooled on and a rich conker colour.sure it was orignal,i should have bought it.
 
My horse used to wear a running martingale when i jumped him. Anyone who knew what they were about could have seen that it was far too loose to be any use - I only put it on him so that I had a neck strap to hang onto

He has got a hunting breatplate for this job now - of course its far too loose to actually affect the saddle

The Criollo is a wonderful little horse. Totally unflappable and tough as sh:t. I used to be best friends with a girl who was the granddaughter of the legendary Emilio Solanet who set the breed standard. His family, to this day, breed the very best Criollos. I understand it is very, very hard to get hold of a top notch Criollo

Western tack is only ever oiled. You have to buy top quality neatsfoot oil - never ever use the rubbish you can buy in most of the tack shops though - it's not the same....and you should never use saddle soap

Western tack is actually very easy to look after, except if you choose to have silver conchos because then you need to clean the silver all the time otherwise it looks shabby. After you have oiled your tack you don't generally do it again for about a year. It takes a good couple of hours to oil a western saddle properly and then reset the fenders so you wouldn't want to be doing it after every ride.

what kind of leather is used to make bridles?

i may take you up on that kind offer of sending over.(have just bought my hay in,worming,farrier etc all to be accounted for.but,birthday money looming!)

Doesn't bother me. What does bother me is people looking at Rocks in his grackle out jumping and judging me - they should get on him without it and see if they have any say over what he does whatsoever!! lol he is the world champion of "Oh i'm just gonna cross my jaw, lean and bomb off now" and the grackle and bit combination has changed that completely and now he goes really easy - but the fact he goes easy now makes people think "well he doesn't need that bit/grackle" and that annoys me

Doesn't bother me as long as it isn't upsetting the horse. I like Parsley have a loose running martingale on George so I have a neck strap to hang on to! Hadn't thought of using a breastplate.
 
I like to see horses being ridden in the simplist tack suitable for their and their riders needs so yes, seeing tack used for the sake of it/fashion/being cool does irritate me. Put then I can be a pedantic old bag sometimes

ETS, it irritates me because I like to put a huge amount of consideration into what is the best piece of tack for my horse and I feel that people who "overtack" do it for all the wrong reasons and often don't stop and think about what that piece of tack is to be used for, how it works and if it is going to be of benifit. I am an overthinker!

That said, I have no quarms with the horse wearing the tack if there is a reason for it and when it comes to bling/fur/colours with tack I have no problem at all, even if I do cringe occasionally.

I think thats the thing - if the item of tack is correctly fitted and the horse is working correctly then it is very difficult to tell whether that piece of tack is needed and in that case I have no problem with it - as I think PF said it is the "flock" mentality and the ignorance of the "it looks good so I'll use it" without out understanding how it works and why to use it that irritates the hell out of me!
 
No it doesn't annoy me at all, who am I to judge what people use on their horses?
So long as it doesn't interfer with their way of going and is no ill fitting then they can put whatever on their horse is it makes the think it will help!
 
Seeing horses wearing breastplates, breast girths, different nosebands etc does not bother me in the slightest...BUT if a horse doesn't need a running martingale, it doesn't "bother" me but I just don't see the point! Probably because I never have enough cash to buy stuff (but at the end of the day who has tons of dosh lying around so you can buy endless supplies of numnahs, saddles, bridles bits etc lol) and so I just think it's kind of stupid.

Also if a horse has loads of boots on then I don't see the point, like when I got my girl, I was told to use brushing boots on her back legs, tendon on her front and over reach for jumping. She doesn't brush so they came off straight away, she didn't need tendon boots on, though I sometimes use them for jumping and she has never over-reached....and there is not much danger of that when she hardly tracks up anyway. If the horse needs the boots, then use them, but if it doesn't, what's the point??
 
I've seen some fabulous little western tack for shetlands, but don't think he'd appreciate it! I did toy with buying a saddle for him, as I thought perhaps riding in a western saddle would be easier for my kids, but then decided I'd rather they learnt the English way first.
 
It does seem to be the case that some people hide their riding inadequacies by "upgrading" their tack when maybe they should be trying LESS severe bits, nosebands and so on and investing the money in riding lessons instead.
If anyone has read Kelly Mark's books there's a hilarious photo, I think it's in Perfect Partners, of some poor horse wearing just about every piece of kit imaginable. And the rider still looks terrified!
 
See I must be oblivious because I would never even notice if people were looking at the tack I had my horse in.....and more to the point I wouldn't give a hoot even if I did.

Lol i don't notice but have ridden past people when warming up before and heard them mutter "that horse doesn't need a grackle" - needless to say i pulled up and lectured them as to why he does need one and did they want to get on him and see for themselves - they declined my offer

doesnt bother me either, when we bought otto we bought a martingale as standard and chucked it on him...a few weeks back he managed to snap it just before he was due to go xc so he went without and hasnt had one since,simply doesnt need it!
