...when looking at adverts for horses for sale, if you see the ad has been over-typed with ****NO TIMEWASTERS*** or ***READVERTISED DUE TO STUPID USELESS TIMEWASTERS WHO SHOULD ALL BE DROWNED***etc? (ok so they aren't usually that bad!)

It might be just me, but I tend to look at these ads and think either a) the person is a psycho or b) someones pulled out of the sale for some reason. I don't understand why people put this on their ads as I think it makes them look bad-tempered, grumpy and intolerant! I kind of get the feeling that if I go and see the horse and don't like it, I'll be labelled a Timewaster! What do you think?

Because all of the above are going to go 'oh they dont want joyriders - I better not go.'

I always imagine "Readvertised due to timewasters" is a goodexcuse for "readvertised as failed vetting and original buyer pulled out" may be wrong but that's always my gut reaction

but what would be a "timewaster"??

i would define one as calling up, making a day/time appointment to view, then cancelling and remaking for another day, cancelling again remaking and finally not turning up at all!!!!!

someone who turns up, tries your pony/horse, then says either immediately or calls later to say it's not suitable, isn't in my book, a timewaster.
 
That's how I view a "timewaster" too. No it wouldn't put me off at all - because I am not a timewaster

A friend of mine put her horse for sale as she was pregnant with her second child and thought that two children plus horse and pony for first child would be too much. A woman came to try the horse, liked him and offered to buy. She then delayed on the collection for so long that it transpired that she was tyring to sell her own horse before she could afford the new one. It took about 6 months before the sale actually went through. Luckily for my friend he was a big hunter type and could live out in the meantime. I think that's DEFINATLY a timewaster!!
 
A timewaster, in my opinion, is someone who strings you along. Comes for several rides, brings 'knowledgable other' and shows significant interest and then disappears off the face of the earth, whilst you may have put other prospective buyers off.

When I go to see a horse I either decide one way or another there and then, or, if I want to check up on something I ALWAYS call that evening to let the Seller know Yay or Nay, it is just polite.
 
That wouldn't have bothered me; actually it often happens to me; means I get livery money for keeping my own horse.....suits me down to the ground actually

i,ve sold 2 youngsters this year and both of them have stayed here until they were a, gelded and b, had available space where they were going.

both purchasers paid a 50% deposit and livery until they were ready to leave me.

And i delivered them at cost.

I agree some people out there do waste peoples time and string people along - I just don't understand why people edit their ads with such aggressive text? I realise they need to let people know the horse is available again, but why not edit with something that doesn't sound quite so nasty?! I'm not a timewaster either, but I would be worried that if I wanted to go and take a second look at the horse, or if I didn't like it I would be shouted at... I may be overreacting and underestimating the amount of timewasters out there I suppose.
 
i think it's just a case of being straight up with the seller..

if you try and its not for you, just say so.

i don't have a problem with folk coming to the yard to try out my ponies and saying "thanks but no thanks it's not for me."

there maybe a better way of re-advertising a horse i agree, but don't be put off going.....
 
I agree - why do people bother to edit the text if they are forced to resubmit the ad. If I recognised the horse from an earlier ad I wouldn't think "oh that must be cr*p, it's being advertised again".
 
Oooh I wouldn't necessarily think that; but I would think "goody, worth a look and worth a low bid if it's any good!"

I don't see the point of it as if you are one of these people who enjoys wasting other's time then which adverts are you going to target first? That's right the ones that say no timewasters!!

I also read it as if you come to see and don't buy then you will be classed as a timewaster and that's just silly!
 
It actually puts me off from viewing the horse as
a) Its not very professional
b) Why are they having so many timewasters? You can screen phonecalls to a certain point.
c) Are they really timewasters or people who do not like the horse and it looks better than this horse is overpriced and not selling.

As someone who spends at least 30 mins on every phonecall I think you can weed out people. Obviously I do not do it on a large scale so its important to get the right people looking at the horse and also for me its a pride thing I have made that horse what it is and I want it to go on being good.

) then something like, 'serious enquiries only please' sounds much better IMO but personally I wouldn't bother and would do the weeding out over the phone as far as possible.
 
Ive said "re-advertised due to timewasters". Because I think if Ive taken the horse off the market and suddenly put it back on, people will wonder why! I wouldnt slag off the timewasters though, but would be honest about why they were.
 
like magicmelon I have taken a horse off the market as found a buyer who came out and tried her twice (including taking her XC schooling and hacking etc), loved her, said they were going to speak to vet next day to arrange vetting, then never heard anything from them again. When I phoned them a week later to ask what was happening about the vetting, they said they would definatly arrange ti for the following week - still nothing. When I phoned the following week, they put the phone down on me after saying they had decided not to buy a horse at all now.
Annoyingly I had turned down a number of viewings in the meantime, so re-advertised and did say it was due to timewasters rather than any fault of the horse. And can you believe it - the same people phoned up to enquire about her - yes the ones who had messed me about before.
 
It wouldn't put me off - I'd just phone/view and assess myself and then make my opinion. It may or may not be that the sellers are aware it does not look esp good to have a horse appearing repeatedly in the 'for sale' section of a magazine.....they are aware it could look like the horse wont sell because there is an issue with it.
