Picking her feet out last night the top/front of her hoof was warm, but as her legs were covered in wet mud (I normally leave it to dry and brush off) went down the the shower room and and washed her legs off and walked her back to her stable and that leg was really warm around the coronet band, there were a few small scabs which picked off quite easily, but no swelling, lumps or bumps and she was'nt lame.

Left her about 45 mins, went back to groom and it had cooled down and was now just slightly warm, towel dried that leg off and plastered in the IV Horse MFP and put her to bed.

This morning there was NO heat and she is still sound?

Wierd? Any explanations?

Its really important to now protect that area with a barrier cream like Udder cream/olive oil etc to prevent it worsening and getting infected. Latest research at Newmarket suggests not picking off the scabs but washing with an antibacterial, drying very thoroughly and applying a barrier until they are healed.

We have a variety of reactions to mudfever but all have responded well to this.

Good luck

My young lad has been a bit tetchy with his hinds legs this week so had the vet look at him and she's treating it as mud fever. He's got very white legs, with pink skin and of course our fields are fairly boggy at the moment. I am armed with a mass of things from the vet (£££!!)

He's sound, but a little bit swollen on both legs. Should I just rest him, or can I carry on riding him?

If you keep excercising him, it will keep the swelling down? My Mare would let me know if she was'nt happy working on it!!

Well, she was out today, got down tonight and all was lovely and cool!! MFP is fabulous

Will keep plastering it on and praying! Its normally her white sock she gets it one, so I did'nt pay as much attention to the other legs.

The mare i have on loan has been proan to getting mud fever, hence what has she got now!! Being thick what is mfp? As her lower leg is slightly swollen and has a small amount of heat in it we have so far gone down the route of applying equi salve and then wrapped VERY loose cling film around affected area with a stable bandage on top, just to loosen the scabs, and tonight we have started to larther hi bi scrub onto area and will wash off tomorrow, will repeat this for next few days, is that advisable? (sorry to pinch ur thread)
