Does My Dog Stink??

When my latest one joined me he'd been living out because of unforseen circumstances and he definitely smelled very 'doggy' compared to the older one. It's only now I think he's smelling 'normal' to me, a few months later.
People have often commented on how 'nice' the older one smells. I quite often stick my face in his fur and have a good sniff, I find it very comforting :p he never really lost what people call 'puppy smell'.

Certain dogs have certain smells I think, nothing on earth smells like a wet Labrador for instance!
My last dog had skin conditions and he was very smelly, bless him :( like greasy cheese.

One thing I can't stand is 'kennel smell' (IE stale pee/old hair) on dogs/clothes/vehicles. Just pure laziness. Brush/walk your dogs FGS.

I thought it was just Floyd smelt like that! Its not strong but if you give him a good nose to coat sniff he almost smells milky. Dylan has no smell at all.

I hate it when peoples dogs and houses smell "doggy" Its usually down to what they are fed I find.

I love the smell of our labs, they smell gorgeous, but they are house dogs and their beds are washed at least weekly. After a days shooting in the rain I confess the house smells doggie then, but clears up the next day.
I obsessively ask non dog owning friends if my house smells, as I do worry, but since Smut the stinky went I get the all clear.

The sibes don't smell doggy at all, they have no grease in their coats and just smell of warm slightly biscuity fur. Their feet pads smell, not unpleasantly, like cool original flavour Doritos. :p

The spaniels are proper honky, they have a greasy gundog coat and the flappy skirt and trailing ears pick up a bit of everything they go through. I still sniff them up, cheese and all.

New pup smelt of other people's house for a few days and now smells of warm biscuit, he will have a very similar coat type to the sibes so hopefully will stay that way.

As per Lev, we also don't have guests so meh, we are free to stink and live among tumbleweeds of hair!

In reality I’ve always hoped that mine don’t actually smell - they are clean and short coated so they shouldn’t do really - I’ve just never dared ask! Their feet do smell very distinctive....
🙄

I'm sure your OH just didn't finish the sentence - what he was going to say was 'she stinks...of roses' 😁

One of my dogs smells basically neutral I think (she should do anyway, the amount of hair she sheds, she must grow a complete new coat every 36 hours). Eira the westie on the other hand....well yes, there's a good reason she responds to the nicknames 'grub' and 'horrid' and has a weekly bath

For those breeders on here who remember VetBed.... years and years ago I still lived at home, and I remember looking over the kitchen door (which was made into a stable/half door) and thinking “who left that dirty piece of VetBed on the kitchen floor there”..... totally genuine.... it was actually a Westie belonging to my mums work colleague that was staying with us at the time 😄

We have three dogs in the house and my partner says they all stink, his spaniel has ongoing allergies and stinks, my lurcher has the smelliest breath (no health problems) in the world-one breath could kill you and the puppy keeps circle round and steps in her own poop. 😊
He says 'and we love them all dearly'

My lot don't smell, but I reckon the house definitely smells with three of them. There are 3 beds in the lounge and 3 in the kitchen, 4 of which are cloth, fairly regularly washed. Saying that, they fart for England and often stand in their own poo!

I'm loving hearing that people live with tumbleweeds of hair. I'm forever scooping up handfuls of fur and I'm always covered. The OH refuses to get them clipped. He does a bit himself, I swear he just does it so he can watch Bear doing his slo-mo Tresemme style advert move!

I don’t care if my dogs smell - you have to be pretty exceptional to be invited to my house, so generally it doesn’t matter 😂😂

Exactly. Everyone that comes to my house owns a dog anyway so probably wouldn’t notice (Im always a bit suspicious of people that don’t like dogs 😂) I don’t care if my dog smells. She smells good to me :)

Luna the husky has a biscuit smell and I love sniffing her paws. Aled (Border Collie) doesn’t smell generally, but when we’re all wet after doing the horses or being over the woods, there can be a distinct doggie smell in the car. We don’t have a lot of visitors either so no idea if the house smells of dog or cat. All toilet outside though, so no horrible smells indoors unless one has a touch of wind, and the majority of the time that’s the OH 😂

Pretty sure my two smell doggy but not exceptionally so. And the house probably smells too. I don't have visitors very often so don't care and anyone that has previously visited the house and been at all snooty (only one, and she had a show home house you weren't allowed to breathe in and I just got fed up of always being looked down on) has been gradually distanced from. None of us smell of actual piss. Which is a nice low hygiene bar to set I think. 😂😂😂

One of our terrier, the oldest one properly stinks, like he's rotting , he's always been the same, I think the other three aren't bad, like everyone says that dry biscuity smell.
We have hard floors all over downstairs and my MIL says it doesn't smell so that is okay with me 😂😁😁

My house dogs smell nice (to me) - they actually have very little smell actually unless you stick your nose in their fur but the kennel dogs can pong especially if we are having a wet spell of weather. I’m sure if you asked a non dog owner or very house proud person whether my house smelled of dogs they probably say yes 🤷‍♀️ Tough!

I don't remember my dog having a strong smell, but that was years ago. "My" dog stayed living with my grandmother when we moved out, both of my parents and my grandmother smoked, the dog would get a bath now and again, and it was a long time ago...

My OH tells me that I stink of horse when I come back from riding, and claims that she can smell me from the other side of the room.

🙄

I love the smell of Drams paws unless he’s been somewhere heinous,it’s doggy but smells like him with a back ground of horse so comforting

I’m currently sitting in the study, which also doubles as a bit of a workshop. There are a couple of leather hides next to me and both dogs are curled up on my lap. It smells of English leather and warm, biscuity dog paws. It’s heavenly.
