Does my head look big in this - the Robocop years :)

Is this the one you suspect of having no depth perception? Perfect solution I'd say!

Yes, the vet thinks he may be temporarily 'losing his head' through an excessive reaction to pain or to fear of pain. There is no solution other than to protect him. That's a police horse riot shield, cost 75 quid including postage.

All the best with him and his new headgear.

I have to say, though, that I would be very worried that he will get it hooked up on something whilst wearing it, whether in field or stable. You've tried everything else, though, so I hope that it all works out. I have no suggestions as to anything you could do differently.

Good luck.

The clips will break and the Velcro will tear. It's as safe as we can make it, and since his last break was done in the field, it seems our only option. He doesn't wear it in the stable, or in the field on his own.

What about a hugely padded headcollar/cheekpieces/lowslungbrowband/noseband/forelocktonoseband affair if the shield doesn't work? Bit like a popped air jacket for his head :)

My TB is a serial head basher. In the 4 years I've owned him, he's only spent about 2 weeks without a bump or scuff somewhere. He whacked above his eye once, which came up like a football, & now has a (permanent?) couple of lumps between his eyes from nearly braining himself on a partition when being unloaded at the vets.

He's got an appt with Anne Dee tomo, so I'm going to ask why he does it. Thanks for reminding me! Perhaps I drive him to banging his head on the wall!

Love it! He's the equine version of Menswear Dog. I thought that the padded headcollar was very 1980's exercise video!

It may be worth finding something to protect the polycarbonate from scratching if he rolls in the field though? A cross between a visor tear off strip and a screen protector for a smart phone.

Good idea about protecting it. Clear sticky back plastic (book protector) should do it.

Finally enough, I think it's actually giving him confidence. He's perfectly happy to wear it.
