SB, it was not a dig. He looks healthy and well cared for. In my opinion he could look better.Looking better means-work him correctly. He has very little muscle /tone and IMO is due to rider fault. Dont be upset, Im answering you honestly.Would you prefer if I was gushing and told you how wonderful he looked? Sorry, I couldnt do that. Mairi.

I have only just read this part! Ooops.
I know what you mean but there are plenty of other horses around that don't work correctly and they don't have a skinny bum!
Do you think it matters if he could look better?? To him I mean? I don't think I could cope with any more power!
depends on what you want him to do! if you need him to go round a one day event then no, I dont think he looks fit enough. If you intend to do local sjing or wh then yes but i think he would look soooooooo much better with a bit of muscle on him.Muscle doesnt necessarily mean hysteria, it means that your horse not only looks great but is able to carry out his job with the minimum of stress and fatigue-it also reduces the risk of him hurting himself(and you). get your bum on him and start working him. Mairi. PS, please post some pics of him after some decent work
.PPs, what the other horses look like has nought to do with what yours does-if the other riders were way overweight and have rampant BO would that make it ok for you to be the same? No need to reply
He drops quite a lot of condition in the winter when he is really fit for hunting and seems to manage ok.
I just can't really see that my attempts to give him some decent work will result in him developing more muscle (well a substantial amount anyway)... like how long would something like that take?? what should I be doing???
I've not seen your other posts but I gather you do well at things, so why listen to your dad!!
PS he looks fat and skinny at the same time because of what Lucinda Fredericks calls a peach bottom, it's a good thing, makes them get more power when jumping!

I think he looks like a good lightweight hunter.

Really?? He certainly has lots of power when jumping!!
Not sure we do well at things but he has lots of energy, power and enthusiasm so I don't think he struggles from his lack of muscles. I know he doesn't look fantastic but I personally believe it's just how he is. Sure if I did loads of work with him he could look better, like if a person went to the gym and did a load of weights I guess.. but he does everything with such ease I think the main benefit of this would just be that he looked better.
weightwise he looks fine......just needs a little more topline & muscle, have you got access to any hilly hacking country?? also, try to make sure he is working round over his back and using his hinds properly, i have heard lunging in a pessoa can help.
he certainly doesn't look a state, what a nasty thing to say.....

I know!!! He was drunk when he said it to me and he hasn't mentioned it since but i know he gets on at my mum about it.
We live in a really hilly area with great hacking so he gets loads of hill work and hacks out about 5 times a week.
Lunging in a pessoa sounds good... he'll love that!!
I'll have to start making him work in more of an outline on hacks I think... I tend to just let him do what he wants.
