Does such a horse exist......or am i being unrealistic???

Skychick contact me in a few months when u have the funds because I know of one (not my own). £3500 including tack and everything you have described above, owner hasnt advertised as home better than price and wants to sell through word of mouth.

Thats interesting. May have to get a second job and save even more pennies...(will obviously tell OH that its saving for when we buy our bigger house ;-) ) he he!

As a follow on I know people do as someone else said 'lie through their teeth' but I want my horse to go to the best home possible, that won't happen if I lie. Hopefully if I am totally honest I'll find a match for him and the person that buys him will love him as much as I do and not sell him on again.

If only all sellers were like this.
Im the same. Hence i put my difficult horse out on loan.
The person i bought him from well and truely lied about him. Luckily i did everything i could to try and work with him when i found out what he was really like. Sadly it didnt work out....but an old owner of his (the one and only person who ever got on with him so i have found out after tracing back through all of his owners) really wanted him back but as she had another horse and is at uni (next to where she lives so doesnt go away) and has worked with problem horses i decided to put him on loan to her. she knows him, knows what his quirks are and how to deal with them etc and so he will be a happy boy and not passed from pillar to post before ending up with mr meat man! I was hoping he was going to be with me for the rest of his days....but.....what i have done may make me sad...but he is in the best possible home now.
Hence....the next horse has to be my perfect horse.....as i dont want to go through the heartbreak of that again! So whilst i may be able to sit to a huge buck, a rear, a leap, a spin etc....i just want a horse that i can have fun with for the rest of its days and enjoy and also give it the best home ever!
Hence checking if my budget is sensible for the criterior!

But no i can never understand why people lie, like you say its not fair on the horse, unless they were seriously lucky like mine was that im such a soft touch and was willing to loose a fair bit of money to do the best for him!

Bloomin horses lol!!

I have just found one just like that, for £4.5 K, being vetted on Thursday. It took AGES to find him, and people just lied about their horses and i wasted much time and money viewing incredibly green frankly awful horses. Keep your list handy and grill owners and do not settle for anything less than what you want, no matter how desperate you get.
S/he is out there it's just a matter of finding him/ her. the money you have is enough in my opinion.

I have one that fits that exact description bar one thing - he has the very occasional spooky spin when hacking alone. Mine's a really lovely fun horse, impeccably behaved and won his last unaff SJ outing. He's up at £3500.

Haven't read all the posts, but what about getting a standardbred.
The mare i have, fits all your wants....they are sooo polite, wouldn't dream of barging, rein snatching etc.
Legs like iron, good doers and will stand all day tied up in trailer. No kicking up a fuss.
Mine is absolutely brilliant at jumping, and she can now canter 3/4 around a 20 metre circle!
First one i have ever had, and now i'm a total convert.

I wouldnt disregard any breed.....even a flippin camel if it would pop a course of jumps at a local show in a nice safe steady manner, hack out on its own with out broncing, leaping etc, and nicely in company without throwing a complete over excited, over energetic 4 hour tantrum lol!!!!
Im not breed biased tbh.....the only thing i would disregard is a really wide horse as i had an accident a few years ago that means i get really bad cramp in my left him if i have to have my legs too far apart for a long period of time.....(no funny comments :-D )
Your mare does sound like a sweetie!

I would say your budget is a good budget.I SPENT a lot of time and money and time looking for same 8yo upwards , i wouldnt like to say or add up wasted journeys .
I ended up buying a 3 yo newly backed tbxstandy he has taught me so much hes four now couldnt have a better partner only obv. he hasnt competed <yet>
Good luck

Yeah i have to admit....im dreading the hunt for the next horse. Its a minefield!
It would be wonderfull if i could find a nice local horse fitting the bill that has maybe belonged to a local pony/riding club that comes with glowing references!!!!
I think the phrase "Pigs Might Fly" springs to mind!!!

Glad you are having a good time with your boy even though he isnt necessarily what you set out to get!

They totally do exist, i sold a mare i had that would do pretty much a bit of anything. She was 15.2hh She would plod along for my mum, she would jump a good 3ft course if i asked her, hack out in serious traffic etc the RDA used her for a bit (i kept her at riding school ii used to work at) they eventually decided she wasnt up for carrying the weights they would need her to. I sold her for £2500 about 5 yrs ago to a 60yr old lady who sill has her now. Best of luck in your quest i'm sure with a bit of time you will find your dream horse :) x

Yes it definately does exist. I Found my girl by complete coincidence. I put a wanted ad in a local paper and had someone contact me. I went to look at horse they contacted me about but for what i wanted to do (which is exactly what you want to do) they said i'd be better suited to another horse (my girly) they brought out this tatty looking chestnut tb, and i really didnt want her! But i went back to ride her and she was amazing. she hadnt been ridden in 16months but they said she was behaving as though she had never been out of work. They pulled her mane and gave her a good old tidy up (and she definately scrubs up well) and i went ahead with getting her. She needs a lot of work doing with her to get her fitness back up but she's everything i coud dream of in a horse. It took me around 3 months to find her.

Double Thankyou:D

I am very fortunate, I have some pretty nice horses right now.

Thats what its all about!!! so well done you for finding the horses that make it fun and enjoyable! as a lot of people have told me recently whilst trying my best to work things out with my little monkey, if its a hobby its got to be fun, enjoyable, rewarding and relaxing! Hence i let him go to someone who enjoys his challenge and i held my hands up and am on the search for an easy life!!!!

I do have a bit of a soft spot for palominos thought, never owned one....but think they are really beautiful!

thats a really nice story, that you found the horse you wanted, but not in te horse you thought you would!

Really encouraging that there are horses out there that are the sort of thing that i am looking for at a price that in time i can realistically afford...i was getting a bit worried....as i have seen hardly any advertised anywhere for sale!!!

My first horse would have ticked every one of your boxes and more besides, he was a perfect angel: sadly gone to the big paddock in the sky, and the last boy would have too, he was a very special horse who looked after me so well.

I do hope you are suited soon, BUT it might be that you have to be a tad flexible on one or two of the things you're listing; it maybe that for example, you get a horse with an "issue" on one or two of the things, and he/she is basically a good type and, with help, you can overcome it and work on it. Not that you deliberately buy something with issues, but what I'm saying is that the "perfect" horse might come with the need to build the partnership over a period of time, and work on the areas that might need improving, rather than having the "perfect"/pushbutton sort of thing. Do you see what I'm saying?

With the one I've got now, he's a real darling, BUT two years ago I was going to sell him!!! - I'm horrified by that now, but he did have some issues with traffic & hacking out solo which until I had some skilled help with him, I didn't realise were more to do with me than the horse!

Personally, I'd be inclined to be guided by your horsey friends and/or your instructor as they know you and the way you ride and hopefully they'll be able to be brutally honest with you.

It might be that you have to totally revise the sort of horse you want, or thought you wanted, or whatever.

I'm a bit weird and odd, and believe that horses "find" who they want to be with - all of mine have done that and I've had three wonderful horses to date. One (my last one) was literally in the field one morning - a complete surprise! One of my liveries had forgotten to tell me she was putting him there - and he was for sale!!!

They do exist, few and far between but I think you have a reasonable budget.
I am able to buy now and through my 3 years at uni I have been looking for horses every single day (no joke). I have a smaller budget than you and I'm looking for something to do all rounder stuff with, but don't mind a few quirks.

HOWEVER...I believe the market is quite slow at the moment, all I can seem to find is 2/3 year olds or very expensive competition horses.

There isn't much around at the moment, but when it gets closer to university time for some people, and the winter you will see more for sale (I think I can call myself an expert watcher now after the past 3 years!). I think I saw about 5/6 horses that were perfect for me around last winter, however I decided to finish uni first...although a good decision, I kind of wish I bought those horses then, as now I have yet another horseless summer :(

Lol thats all that i can find too is youngters just backed and coming back into work after being turned away.....or as you say v v expensive competition horses that would be wasted on my. I dont have the time to event to any sort of level due to work so they would be a complete waste on me!

I keep watching the ponyclub website to see if anything appears.......am hopeing it might when it comes to people going to uni!

just to add my 2p! Yes they do. I have a 15.1hh mare and she ticks all your boxes except she is 12 yrs old. She was advertised for £3500 in her shoes (no wardrobe), has competed successfully BE but is also a totally sane happy hacker and in and around the field / stable. Sometimes the ex been there done it competition horses who are a bit older fit this kind of description perfectly.

I placed a wanted on loan ad and this mare found me, had her on loan for 9 months and then bought her for £1800 with full wardrobe.

Yeah thats v true re the older been there done it comp horses.
Age would be one thing i would definately be flexible on. My current horse, well hes now out on loan, but he was 12. So im not against an older horse.
My arab was 15 when i got him and 18 when i sold him......and he was fitter and faster than ever at 18 so he went to a showjumping home!

I would definately be flexible, as long as i ended up with a horse that wasnt trying to throw me off every few mins and would hack nicely alone and in company and behaved at a show i would be happy! but wouldnt we all lol!!

they exist, my old man was exactly that when we bought him although roughly 16hh. We paid under 2k for him as he was not suited to the lady who bought him as he was never going to sj for bsja. He was so good in his prime, if anything he is too friendly with people! No your not being unrealistic you will just have to search hard and maybe word of mouth rather than adverts, i think these type of horses rarely get to advert stage!! Good luck when you eventually start looking

Good point re good horses probably not even making it to advert....i think you could be right there, will have to put the word out locally when i start looking. Thanks for the good luck....im gonna need it i think!!!

I have one that would suit but without the jumping experience you're looking.

It would probably be easier to buy something a bit young with the experience, but with the perfect temperament, and pay for it to be schooled.

You could gets a really nice 4yr old with an amazing temperament for £3000 then spend the other £1000 on schooling and lessons.

I have a mare who fits that discription apart from shes 13 years old. I just cant seem to sell her as shes full TB, no one wants full TBs. I guess i will just be selling her for a really cheap price and not to the kind of home id like her to go to due to the price.

Yep! They definitely do! They will probably start around your budget price though as someone has had to do a lot of work/spend a lot of money to get them there!

My horse (not for sale though!) would near enough do your job. He is slighly over height at 16hh, and underage (lol) at rising 6, but he does everything you ask for..... although he will spin on occasion.

This is him:

Sensible flatwork and behaving very well at first show!

They are out there, just be prepared to look outside the box xx :)

What a lovely person you are Skychick. If I had a suitable horse for you I would be so happy to sell to you.Like you, I had one that was unsuitable for me and had to sell.Lost money but got him a good and suitable home.I now have one just like you discribe except that he is 14.2 and not for sale!!! 14.2 was the right height for me.Bought as a confidence giver for a teenager, done a bit of everything.Did his job a bit too well and she was bored with him.Made him perfect for me.Plod all day quite happily with a novice, capable of so much more with a better rider. They are out there. He was the third I saw.Took my instructor too.Best thing I have ever done. One tip I was given, look everywhere at everything.Even dealers without a particularly good reputation and even adverts that look a little rough.I nearlt passed over Red, advert and pics were useless but he SOUNDED right.Bingo, he was.
