Basically, my horses are all getting on in years with my youngest (who is 17) being diagnosed with Navicular last summer I was devastated. He is slowly coming right with corrective shoeing but I doubt we will be able to do more than hack out - I don't want to push him either, I just want him to be happy.

I will admit I am REALLY missing my jumping though having not done any hunting/jumping for well over a year now. I cannot currently afford to have another horse, having three oldies so I was wondering if there are people out there who have horses that jump and want them competing/hunting for them from time to time? Maybe would suit someone who's horse loves to jump but owner doesn't. I cannot afford a massive cost towards the horse so not like a loan agreement but having ridden for people for a living; I would be offering the service for free (so basically somebody would be getting the horse schooled for free, in return for letting me have some fun!) what does everyone think? And do these sort of things even exist?! ?

When I'm busy in the week sometimes I pay someone to exercise mine so it's definitely possible!

My daughter’s friend rides and competes on another friend’s horse. It seems to work, especially as the rider recently had a child. Confess don’t know how they came to that arrangement but they are both members of our local riding club so that may be a way of finding someone.

Yep I had someone jump Robin. She didn’t have time for her own horse having young children. I knew her as she used to keep her horse on the yard. She had evented to novice and had the same idea on keeping horses as I did. I don’t jump. Robin loves it. I did the work, she rode 3 times a week and if she wanted to compete, I did the transport and she paid the entries. She did some BE successfully with him and I loved seeing him out doing what he was good at. Sadly she hurt her shoulder so stopped riding.

I hate leaving the ground so I don’t jump my horses myself (dressage) but I like to keep my horses happy so someone jumps them for me every couple of weeks and it works really well.

Yes, such a thing exists. I did something similar for someone when I was at uni. Where in Lincolnshire are you? I don’t necessarily need someone, but you’d be more than welcome to have a play on my boy!

thank you so that's very kind! I am between Grantham and Lincoln. Whereabouts are you? Feel free to pm me. ?

I used to compete and jump an older lady's pony in my thirties before I had my own. She was thrilled to get the rosettes and I loved the fun. I am sure you could find a horse to jump near you. Check out your riding club/local venue/equestrian centre for possibles.

Totally, mines been off games this year and I’ve competed one, taken another out schooling and jumped another at home. One I’m still riding regularly who’s an absolute cracker and his owners are keen for me to take him out after lockdown. So yes, plenty of owners will want that for their horses and it’s not always you having to put mileage on a green horse either. Quite a few people out their with horses whose ability exceeds their ambition, but they enjoy seeing the horse getting out and having fun. I’m sure if you just mention you’re looking for rides something will turn up - good luck :)

There will be no doubt some eventers with lockdown pregnancies who need their horses competed after last years rubbish season - stick up an ad and see what happens!

I’d love this! I’m pregnant and my mare is green so I would even pay comp fees if someone with the right riding style and skill could keep my pony ticking over for me until I get back on.

I have a sharer but she’s no where near experienced enough to put that pressure on.

You’ll definitely find something, maybe through riding clubs as someone above said.

My sharer at my old yard shared for free, because she helped me appease my horse in the effort to contain her fencewalking. In exchange, sharer got the horse for the weekends. This was also a win because the yard owners hated me, and I wanted to spend as little time at the yard as humanly possible, while not skimping on my horse feeling like a queen, because she knows she is. Even on weekends I wasn't gallivanting up some mountain, I knew I did not have to subject myself to the yard because sharer would take excellent care of my horse.

These arrangements can work, provided everyone feels get some benefit out of it.

Yes, I used to do this a lot.

I would also take them to lessons, clinics, shows etc for people who didn’t have the time or inclination.

I’d offer to pay entry fees or pay for lessons, and I would do things like clean tack, or buy grooming items and saddlecloths, boots and bandages.

I’d also make sure that both me and the horse looked clean and smart when they can to watch me ride. Little things to let them know that you’re taking it seriously and you appreciate the opportunity.
