This keeps happening to my 11yo daughter, she does local showing and has been at the top of the line up with the individual shows completed and the judges doing their final deliberation, when late entries or ring hoppers appear at the gate, get let in, do an individual show, and in some cases have won the class. I know that people want to do different classes but surely there comes a point when it is no longer fair on those who have been on time and done the whole class for late entries to come in. :( Does this bother anyone else?

On Sunday someone was doing her nut at Equifest because the judge refused to allow entry into the class because they had started cantering. (This was in a riding hack class). I think that was absolutely the right decision.

yes and it shouldnt happen. once the gate is shut that should be it.
just gains an advantage, usually means said horse doesnt stand for long periods and/or is frankly dangerous in company

Completely agree! Its not fair to those who were organised and turned up on time and sets a terrible example to young riders

It does annoy me too!

I've been the person trying to fit several classes in on several ponies but have always thought that I should be there at the start of the class to do the 'go round together'. At a local level I have occasionally asked to leave temporarily to go and do an SJ round but have always come straight back to stand in line.

I would never enter showing classes when I thought it would require me to be in different places at different times.

With respect leaving to go do a sj round in the middle of a class would seriously wind me up. If your in the class in the ring your in the class in the ring. Its all about how your animals behaves throughout the class and in the line up.

Well on Sunday one pony left our class to do the PC pony class in the next ring-and two came out of the PC ring to join our class, ridden pony. The original children had completed their shows and were then told they would have to wait because the others were coming. So it felt a bit like they were starting again....
The pony who won would probably have won anyway but it still took away the win from my daughter who had been present all the way through the class.

In affiliated showing classes as soon as the horses have come out of walk so are trotting no other horses are allowed to enter the ring. there are always exceptions to every rule though!!

I agree very unfair and should not be allowed as its a unfair advantage

I think that perhaps some lee-way should be given if the classes are running late, resulting in 2 classes which shouldn't have done so, clashing. But certainly no-one should be allowed in after all the individual shows, in fact IMO when all the horses have trotted and cantered together it is too late for a late entry.

I let late ones in just when trot was called in the group, but then had people who [without asking either] would just come in and stand in the line up about 3/4 of the way through doing conformation and individual?! They got sent back out without a second thought.
[Local level]

At last show the other weekend, my riding horse class was running alongside the SJ which I was also entered in, so asked the SJ stewards politely when I put my entry in if I could go last at all due to this. Which they did quite happily and I still only *just* got into it in time lol. No warm up fence, so straight into my round lol...but no way would I have asked to leave my riding horse class to get there in time for it. [Or vice versa....tried to enter my Riding horse class late.]

I must be old school, but you enter a class - you do that class from start till finish/you are no longer required. If you want to do more than 1 class and they clash - tough - pick one and find another show to do the other class at!

When I was younger I remember it being very very rude to be late for a class. You were there when they called you and that was that.

And I'm only 27, so that wasnt that long ago!!!!!!

I can understand why people get wound up or cross by this but I have had the boot on the other foot when due to classes not running on time have had to start one class, leave to start another and then go back. This is especially fun if one class is a ridden class and the other in hand. However, I always speak to the judge / ring steward before the class is officially started and seek permission. After all I have paid my entry fee and therefore am entitled to have a chance at a top spot.

I must admit after being a secretary at a show it is so annoying when people kept asking stuff like "ohh can you not just squeeze us in" I eventualy just said once the sheet has gone you cannot enter, didn't half annoy some people but it made my job very hard!
