does this get on your nerves as much as mine

i just think its mad now i have to train and pass a test for everything yet others with GRANDFATHER RIGHTS no matter what there capabilities can do or drive how and what they like

And they have free bus passes, which will be abolished long before we retire

And they get a useful retirement with retirement age of 60 women/65 men, but now it's creeping up so by time we retire, we'll be working till 90 first to get that retirement

And their pensions are better than ours will ever be

;-)

I must add i drive trailers at work and had no issues with the actual trailer part of test i actually failed as i messed up a roundabout (long story stupid mistake not to drastic but hay ho)

I have to say that I really think that it is more important to be able to negotiate a roundabout safely than to be able to reverse a trailer. Admittedly the ability to reverse is useful if you drive a trailer but EVERY driver should be able to go round a roundabout safely EVERY time.
Those of us who have been driving a long time without accidents have the experience to do this.

oh yeah thanks for that and here is one of them smart replies yes . i was not having a go at anyone just simply stating fact. i have driven for 7 years now with NO accidents and am confident i am a good driver even round roundabouts. i drive horses around alot at work as well as very large tractors and trailers thanks. i dont need to go into it but especially for you as you took the time to have a dig!! i got undertook as i was going to leave roundabout so was no longer safe for me to come off so i had to go all the way round changing lanes etc that is a fail you are not aloud to do that even if it is 1 safer and you do it in a safe way. hoe you drive normally or how it was legal back in the day its totally different now much harder and far more strict and getting worse every year most people if they had to take another driving test would fail i promise you

As I'm old, I haven't had to take an extra test to drive 7.5t or tow.
However, whilst I can drive big trucks no problem whatsoever, even getting in and out of some awkward situations with ease, I can't tow for toffee (over the years I have tried and tried), neither can I parallel park a car (but I can a truck!).
It is unfair on the younger members of society, just because you passed post '97 doesn't mean you are any less safe to be on the road with animal than us oldies.

I passed my test in 1968 - that's just after the man with a red flag was done away with for you young'uns and I'll take on all comers with any kind on trailer!

I spend much of my time in a tipper truck with various kinds of big kit on a trailer behind and use articulated vehicles on sites - on the old yard I used an old Fergy tractor to tow the muck cart which was made out of an old Dennis dustcart welded to a fixed drawbar - I could reverse that through three gates to the heap in a snow storm. Not many of us left! Haha.

that's awesome did you no you can train people to tow a trailer your wisdom would be well passed on. it really is practice yes i drive a massey and muck trailer, i move straw about on a loader to its great fun. im quite short and big trucks etc i love lol. i no there are loads that are awesome drivers but a lot of bad ones to. its going to cost me about £800 ish to get a bit of paper to say i can tow lol still never mind ay :))

I was thinking about this post earlier. I bought my first trailer today having never towed anything in my life. I'm legal to tow as I passed my test early enough.
Duding the 1.5 hour drive back home with my trailer I was thinking ' this isn't too bad'.
The kind dealer had shown me how to hitch and unhitch etc and it only took me a few attempts to park it.
What the nice dealer hadn't show me was the trailer handbrake. I was happily winding down the jockey wheel and unhitching the trailer when it started to roll forward!
Luckily a) it was only a slight slope and b) it was rolling towards my vehicle (not great - but better than rolling off!). I shoved it back and re-hitched it while I went off to find some chocks. Only when I came to unhitch it again did I notice the handbrake lever.
I think some training might have prevented this mishap.
Fingers crossed relocating it to the yard this evening and parking it runs a bit more smoothly.
On the upside...I HAVE TRANSPORT! I can get out there and strut my stuff now.

well done on getting mobile hope you enjoy getting out and about i hope to be to soon :D . nice man to have explained how to hitch/unhitch although you would have thought he might have pointed out the handbrake. oh and if its a IW trailer my instructor bloke said not to park it with handbrake on use wheel blocks as hand brake fixes on just use it when hitching and unhitching or for short period of time ENJOY :)

That generally applies to any trailer that is left un used for any length of time especially in sub zero temperatures when the bloody thing freezes on and then snaps the cable trying to release it or siezes up the brakes etc. Oh been there and done it lol and the was a Bateson!

You are being just a little on the patronising side. And utter *******s that the test was so much easier before 1997! Where on earth did you get that information from? tbh it just sounds like sour grapes. Yes I got my license before 1997, used to have a horse lorry, drive around 12 - 18,000 miles a year as part of my job. Also have a large double trailer and can park it (in a tricky space where others don't want to at our yard), reverse it (straight) round corners AND I know how to check the maintenance on it, tyres etc inbetween servicing. Should also say that the large number of oldies at my yard can all do the same with no problem.

Sorry you need to do a test, thats life, not always fair and I am sure you did not mean to come across in quite the way you did!!

I never leave my handbrake on for that exact same reason - there are bricks behind the wheels to stop it slipping

have you read all my posts ???? yes first one was a bit of a rant and yes sour grapes its a hell of alot of money before you even think of buying trailer!!! and i got that info from speaking to other ' as you called them oldies'. If you had read my posts i did say on several occasions that i no its not every body its a select few but i always seem to find that few, and that sorry for moan bla bla. In all fareness yes it sucks big time for honest hard working folk who just want to enjoy taking there horses out. Yes like you said for me and many my age it is tuff and we do have to lump it and coff up money if we want to take our horses out.

oh and not patronising was genuinely being nice it seems to be a rare thing on here nowadays sorry to anyone who thought that thought i was being a little helpful as i never new about the handbrake can see y most keep there mouth (fingers lol) shut.

Take a while to think why pre97ersdon't have to take a test. Whilst it would be preferable for every one to prove they can do the maneuvers how long do you think it would take for them all to be tested? Who would be called for testing first? Would anyone lose their job because they couldn't take their test in time? Would there be sufficient numbers of instructors, etc, etc.

Yeah i no totally unfeasible. like i said first post was a strop lol and i do have to just coff up dont make it any less frustrating as it would for anyone to keep coming across people who cant drive for toffee. See now i just feel like i apologising all the time def wont open mouth next time

Thanks - I twigged that when I got to the yard and saw everyone else had wheel chocks.
Also the nice man pointed out that if I reverse into a space to always pull forward a little once I've parked so the auto-reverse doesn't stick.
I've already been looking up what fun rides are coming up, and i've got it in time to catch the start of our local dressage league.

As a pre 97 passer with the extra rights on my licence......couldnt agree with you more :-))
I cant reverse a trailer for toffee and it would give me the necessary impetus to go and get trained so I could!!

Agreed I am pre 1997 and can't reverse!!! However, I am a quiet and attentive driver and give my neds a comfy ride.

There should definitely be a test for caravanners, the number of journeys that get ruined by a caravan going to fast and ending up the wrong way up on the M5!

To be fair I know plenty of people that can't negotiate a roundabout even without a trailer.
