I may be faced with retiring my girl from school work soon as I don't think her legs will stand up to it due to previous suspensory issues.

She is only 10 and was diagnosed with these problems a couple of years ago buy since I rehabbed her she has been sound it is only lately I feel like she is not completely comfortable with her school work. I am obviously devastated, I am the classic one horse owner, am on a nice livery yard which has great schools but poor hacking. I do like hacking but am not a happy hacker, I enjoy learning and that feeling you get when things come together in the school is probably the reason I ride :(

So my original question do people loan horses just as a hack, she is safe but not a novices ride although I don't think any horse should be on the road with a novice. We have been through so much together that I can have no bad come to her, I would never forgive myself. I think in the new year I will move her to a yard with excellent hacking that I have always discarded because its schools are atrocious. I wish I could afford two, I probably could if I stretched my self but would still have the problem of my current yard isn't suitable for a hacker and the yard that would be suitable for my mare would be no good for something to bring on which is realistically what my new horse budget would afford me. There is definately no way I could keep two on separate yards either.

I can't seem to make it work in my head and I feel so selfish thinking any of it. I would like to think she wouldnt go too far away either and continue to contribute to costs, eg insurance, feet, feed etc. I will speak with my vet in the new year and do a work up to see what we are actually dealing with but I can't help think of the future.

Does anyone have any happy experiences of this kind of loan?

Yeah I suppose two part loans could work even if the horses were at different yards. Could become complicated I guess but as long as every party was as reliable and committed as I know I would be then it could work. I bet she would like 2 mummy's lol twice the treats :) good idea. Could mean i may be able to find a ride on something competition rather than having to buy sonething young or green. Good idea :)

That home most definitely exists, because its the home my horse has. I used to compete, but have no time now, nor really the inclination if I am honest. My horse is my 'me time', and all we do is hack now, we both love it, and he even knows the tone of my voice when I say 'lets go hacking'. My horse is nearly 20, he has never enjoyed being in the school, even though he loved his dressage, he hated 'practice'.

I know plenty of people would provide the kind of home you are looking for as well. However, why dont you take on a sharer who wants to hack as well. You can then still keep involved and keep your costs down.

Yes I think they exist for safe horses, loans and definitely part loans where you can keep an eye. Lots of people don't compete or anything due to lack of transport more than anything. I have had loads of part loans where I only hacked and I loved it!

Only problem with taking on a sharer is I couldn't really advertise her as a hack and stay where I am. It wouldn't be fair on the sharer cause the hacking is poor. The facilities are great but it's always been my one complaint about it as a yard. I just can't imagine having the time to do two on different yards like many I do a classic 9-5ish job and get home at 9 most nights anyway and that's only going to one yard lol

It's really nice to hear they exist though, your boy sounds very lucky :) do you think her size would go against her, she is a 16.1 warmblood type x tb type. Can't help but think that a lot of people looking for a hack might prefer something more sturdy. She does ride small though I guess,so I would just have to chuck them up before they can decide she is too big lol :)

I have a part retired 20 y/o out on full loan who hacks out 2/3 times a week and is spoiled rotten in between hacks! He also acts as companion to the ladies other horse. It was not easy to find but yes they do exist (he's been there 18 months problem free)

I also recommend considering two sharers, I've had this for a couple of mine over the years and it works out well, finding a happy hacker for 2/3 days a week is easier than a 7 day a week happy hacker. You maintain control over your mare (where she is, major decisions on care etc.) - a little hard work and you may need to contribute financially (but I think you've already said that would be OK) but worth a thought!!

Just read your concerns about 2 yards, if you had two shares you could move her to the yard with nice hacking - in effect she'd be on full loan to two different people but with you in the middle making big decisions.

Wow 3 mummy's, if I told her the treat possibilitys in that she would probably pack her own bags lol

Definately is something to consider. Even if she went on full loan I would like to contribute financially as I feel it would only be right plus I feed a few suppliments which are not cheap and are my choice. I couldn't expect the loaner to pay for them.

We don't have a school at my yard, so it's all about hacking. I wouldn't think you'd have any trouble finding someone willing to do this as we're all more than happy to do what we do.

Good luck whatever you decide :)

Thanks murph that is good to hear. I guess i am only thinking that I wouldn't be happy with just hacking when I bet there are lots of yards like yours where the focus is on hacking. Maybe moving her to the new yard with the good hacking will open up more opportunity for finding sharers, that yard is only 10 mins from my house too. It doesn't feel quite so scary thinking she would only be down the road. :)

Why dont you look for a part loan for you to ride that has decent hacking, put your name down to move to that yard and look for a sharer for yours too. That way they will only be limited for a short time if at all

This is exactly what i was going to suggest - there has been a few posts on here about folk not being able to find someone decent to ride their horse - wasnt one an elementary schoolmaster?

Often folk with horses like this do not really want payment, they just want the time as in comitment - and ridden work.... and if you want to advance they would probably snatch your hand off if you wanted supervised lessons etc on theirs?

Thanks guys, I would love a ride on an elementary school master :) I guess then if I ever found my self in financial difficulty I would also not have the problem of two horses similarly if the sharer of my mare ever let me down I would not have to worry about having to have the winter costs of two horses.

Pretty sure my girl is one of the happiest hackers out there, just took her round the block before it got dark. I am hungover (work Christmas do) was without a saddle as mine is not quite right plus stupidly I also forgot my jods so had to put some waterproof trousers over my jeans which made it pretty slippy. We met 4 boys on a trampoline, numerous dogs out of control two old ladys moving a wheels bin and waving a blue plastic bag around and she didn't bat an eye lol. My Suburban should of been dressage horse might find country life a bit boring lol :D

What part of the world are you in ? So many people on here know people if you know what I mean - you cannot openly advertise but i am sure folk would pm you if they hear of anything.

leicestershire :) the yard I would probably move my girl too is north Leicestershire (a village near quorn) so amazing hacking. But the yard I am currently on is South Leic I guess, junction 21 on the M1. I live near one and work near the other so anywhere in between would be fine I guess :)

I feel so much better with all these ideas. I never even thought of two shares :)

yes- there are homes out there like that. My mare whose a happy hacker is on loan to me :) She has a minor pelvic problem from a 2yo, which prevents her from heavy/competition work, going in an outline and SJ due to the twists and turns. She's able to do occasional school work with light contact and few circles esc, but we don't have a school, so very rarely do any schooling. She's fine to jump though (aslong as there aren't lots of turns in an enclosed space) so we had lot's of fun in the summer jumping over logs/ditches whilst out hacking!

I'm very happy just to hack out every day, and she has a very loving home with people who adore her, so there are homes out there who would jump at the chance of having a happy hacker on loan :)
