Cecil seems to have broken or pulled much of his claw off.
He’s not even slightly lame but is licking it a fair bit. Pretty sure he did it tearing round the fields last night out walking as he was at the vets before having a booster and check so one of us would have noticed it!

if it’s not sore (although that could be why he’s licking it) I’d just bathe in salt water a couple of times a day. I’m not sure what the vet would do for it if it’s not bleeding or infected, so probably just as well to monitor.

Yes I suppose it could, he’s not licking it constantly but he’s not a paw licker at all usually.
I kept him on a long line this morning walking so he didn’t race around but Is perfectly sound on it.
I’ll give it a bathe or dunk to keep clean, thanks

One of ours did similar, I did take her to the vets, but I didn't really need to.
Like others have said, keep it clean and maybe some metacam if you have any

probably will need pain relief and possibly anti biotics for that.

My whippets do this all the time and as a VN I deal with it at home. A light dressing if they are licking, and strict with no licking/chewing. Takes a long time to grow back but after a few days the sensitivity is gone.

Wouldn’t advise repetitive bathing. Warm, damp skin is lovely for bacteria growth. Keep it clean but dry.

Mine has now lost 4 nails completely and has ripped another one tonight, not come clean off so sore when it catches on anything. In her case it might be SLO an auto immune disease. Vet tomorrow so will hopefully know more then.

It’s looking much better already!
I did dunk it in some mild Hibi yesterday because he came home from a walk with blood and dust all over his paw. I thought the blood was coming from somewhere else but think maybe he re-caught the claw walking so he’s on lock down for a day or two! Apart from looking shorter today it’s the same colour as his other claws ?
