When mounting in the school, horse tenses up, arches his back and is jumpy as soon as you've got on.

When mounting outside of the school, he is fine.

Humm? Is there anything new in the school or around the edge that me might be nervous about?

I would get horsies back checked just to rule it out to be honest. It makes sence that he tenses more when mounted in the school because you are generally going to be working him harder asking him to use his back more ect than when you go on a hack.

Hope you get it sorted and its nothing sinister

Yup, sounds like your horse might be saying something to you here. In the school he's being presumably asked to work in an outline, which is obviously causing him distress, fear and/or pain, so it might be worth checking teeth/bit; saddle etc.

Also you might try lunging him in the school to see if there's any difference without carrying a rider? This might help to eliminate/pinpoint where the problem is; he might be stiffer on one rein etc.

I'd definately look further into this; you don't want him to develop evasions and start napping, or whatever, which can easily happen if you don't research it at this stage.
