Ok so my young unbroken mare needs teeth doing, but has had bit in once the other week and went nuts and it wouldnt come out of mouth properly, today i showed her the bit, not putting it in (till dentist been) but just showed it to her, and covered it in honey.......however she chucked her head in the air and started to get really *****ty......however didnt bat eyelid abt saddle being on etc.....

When starting off my girl she used to throw her head in the air & resent the bit. I deduced she hated the nutcracker action of the very mild snaffle I was using. Over the years I have used hackamores, waterford & a myler, in which she has gone very happily. She obviously hated anything touching the roof of her mouth.

Do you know someone with a scrawbrig or a striaght bar or mouth kind shaped bit you could give a go to see if you get a different reaction?

If you rode her the first day you got the bit in that may be why she is not keen to have the same experience.

I would say yes it does sound like pain association. I would get her teeth done ASAP, having her sedated if nessecary so you don't have to fight with her which will create further negative experiences! I would then spend lots of time de-sensitising her to being touched around her head, mouth, ears, poll etc then gradually reintroduce her to a bit but use a very mild one such as a mullen mouth nathe or similar (nothing too big or bulky or with too many things on it). Try not to get annoyed at her, she is only a baby.

Im not annoyed as such, just bit worried, she is such a sweet heart but its this one thing...dentist is coming this week, he will let me know exactly when as he's fitting me in as a favour...then hopefully we can get this sorted...im wondering if she has a cap on her teeth as the bit seemed to catch when i took it out....Bless her though, she came running in the pitch black when i called for her tonight at the gate, despite a very scary puddle to which she walked the long way round!
