Does this sound like too much work?

Here is what I am planning my winter routine to be:

Monday: 45mins - 1hr school (by my instructor) in morning and lunge (by me) in evening

Tuesday: 45 mins - 1 hr school (by my instructor)

Weds: 1 hr lesson

Thurs: 30 mins school

Fri: off

Sat: hack am and lunge pm

Sun: compete

What do you think?

I think that is too much...
If I was competing on a sunday I would always hack on a monday to walk them out and stretch off their muscles. Just my opinion though!

Why the most work the day after competing?
I would give Monday off and unless a reason for lungeing just a good hack on the sat.
I dont think it is too much as such ,maybe a little more variety an extra hack mid week would do.
It depends a little on age/level competing/turnout .

Hmm I agree it's not ideal but my problem is that I only get to the yard at 7.30 in the evening so it's dark so I can only hack at weekends. And my instructor can only school on Monday's and Tuesday's.
How would you rearrange it?

Hmm maybe I'll talk to my instructor and do this:

Mon: off
Tues: school by instructor
Weds: lesson
Thurs: school
Fri: school by instructor
Sat: hack am and lunge pm ( lunging really is helping him)
Sun: compete or hack

I would do the following:

Monday: day off or lightly lunge to stretch off (ie with no side reins etc.)
Tuesday: 45-1hr school by instructor
Wednesday:30 min school/lunge
Thursday: 1hr lesson
Friday: day off
Saturday: 1hr hack (do you need to lunge before competing?)
Sunday: compete

I think that mixes things up a bit so your horse isn't doing the most intensive exercise in a block.
What kind of competing do you do and what is your instructor/you doing with the horse? I think that also depends on what you do

Thanks that is a better arrangement. I'll talk to my instructor

We are only doing prelim dressage or 2ft jumping or trec - nothing massively strenuous!

I like to work him hard the day before a comp - means he gets less excited!

This is just light/medium work - he could well cope with more.

A day off after a days competing - depending on the extent of the competition work - ie ODE, Hunting = day off
A couple of rounds show jumping or a couple of dressage tests then fine to work.

He needs to work to maintain fitness. After schooling a ½hr hack to cool down would be good.

Between 1 & 2 hours work daily would be fine for him.

To keep the liveries fit for their owners they would get at least 1hr continuous steady trotting on the roads five days a week - the owners would often ride in the evenings.

That's an interesting view too.

I am hacking more during the week to cool off while it's still light in the evenings. Hate it when it gets dark.

Too much work, not enough hacking. His brain wil fry/go very stale and his injury risk is higher if he is constantly schooling. Have days totally off schooling, just giong out for a hack

Its not too much work ,just vary it and as you jump,do trec some of the schooling can be for these activities. Most horses dont work too hard and many seem to be on a permanent diet due to lack of work.
If you cannot do more hacking in the winter dont worry about it.
My liveries often school during the week and hack/compete at weekends as its dark after school/work and none of the horses here seem to mind.We hack more in the summer.

Make your second instructor session somebody hacking him out, you'd be paying your instructor to ride him anyway. On your sat lugne in pm-just hack him once for an extended period. It is only those who don't hack who don't realise how much the horses enjoy it instead of schooling.

Oh & I don't think he will go stale schooling as long as its varied- ours can be a pig on the road so most of his work is in the field. I can count on 1 hand how many times he's been hacking in 3yrs. The key is just not the same thing endlessly. We mix flat, jumoing

Stupid phone....as I was saying...flat, jumping, some dressage tests, gymkhana (funny but different :) ) even messing about trying to play polo with a hockey stick & a tennis ball - he loves that!!!! Xx
