When my sister and I compete it can be sometimes a grumpy affair! Not between sister and I but with her horse!

Now this might sound funny (which it has been in the past, when my sister is riding she finds it very embarrassing! lol ) but my sisters horse just won't stop trumping when we are out competing! Yesterday was especially severe though. The mare would pass wind (quite loudly, then she would kick at her stomach and then have the runs. She was like this most of the time we were at the dressage.
She still eats when we are out and is ok in all other ways, just really gassy and lots of pooh!! Very very grumpy too

I thought she might have stomach ulcers but I've not come across them before so not really sure what the signs are? I thought this might be the case as she is only like this when we go out somewhere?

I've also posted this on the competition page

Wrong end of the process for ulcers to be the cause. Maybe more she gets overexcited.

Does your sister give her a big feed a couple of hours before taking her out?

Not sure what she gives her before she goes out, but it won't be much as she's such a greedy thing!

What do you mean by wrong end of the process?

This sounds a bit more like a hind gut issue, rather than the stomach....:p
I wouldn't rule ulcers out, try this risk assessment quiz to check her overall risk and also find all the info about clinical presentation. http://www.equinegastriculcers.co.uk/risk/index.html

I would also try increasing the fibre amount in her diet and try probiotics. Sounds like a stress related issue though. The only way to rule out ulcers once and for all is a gastroscope...

Good luck

I have a mare who gets very windy at certain times of the year. I'm convinced it's grass upsetting her, as if I take her off completely this settles down. Totally unscientific btw! lol

It sounds like she's suffering from stress related acidosis of the hind gut to me - The balance of microflora within the gut can easily be unbalanced by stress, which can result in scouring and invasion by bad bacteria (which brings the excess wind) Ideally you need something to combat the acidosis and rebalance the hind gut when she's going to experience stress - such as travelling/competing etc - Prebiotics and Yea sacc are two excellent ingredients which support the hind gut and both are designed to encourage good bacteria to flourish and improve feed (protein) utilisation.

Hi Kate, just having a read of this (am interested in all things gut related)!

I would suggest coligone or neigh lox - but wondering if coligone helps as Kate you have not mentioned it?

I am such an unbelievable fan of Coligone - I cant help but preach about it everytime I see and equine gastric issue!

We had a lot of gut issues, and behavioural issues with my TBxID. He was getign frequest colic

We found taking him off all cereals (and any derivatives) and eliminating mollasses (always best for any horse) - and then we used linseed meal which is a mucilage and soothes the gut - did the job - no more colic and significant improvement in temperament. No more tantrums when being ridden

(note - linseed meal, not oil, always best to feed the meal, micronised, no need to cook)
