hello all
so went to a yard today to find out how much to keep my horse there and this is the price how does this relate to everyone else??
£240. per month
In that price is included a box, A field, hay and bedding and use of hacking and school.
what do you think? ill get my own feed sounds ok to me. in ireland it was much more i only paid for the box and everything else was on top.

thank you

So is it it DIY? They are providing hay, bedding and feed? And you pay for everything else and do your horse yourself? That works out £80 a week, which, if DIY, to me seems a bit much. If it's part livery then it's normal and fine.

I think that sounds quite expensive if it's totally DIY?

Basic stable and field rent/ use of facilities should be maximum £30 (and thats top end) so you'd have to use about £30 worth of hay and bedding a week which is quite a lot

ermm it sounds steep but I pay £38 per week for top end DIY that doesn't include hay and bedding so my whole bill nornally comes to £240, so I dont think it's too bad if the yard has good facilities.

£60/wk all inc except hard feed?
sounds top end unless the facilities are very smart

Yard near me (Gloucestershire) does stable, sand arena, turnout and nice hacking with lots of competition centres really close by. Makes own haylage and straw on site - all inc. Same deal as yours - £45/wk

My stables are £25/box then feed, haylage & bedding are on top of that. I reckon on it costing approx £35-40/wk per stable all in. (in the winter when they're stabled most of the time)
ie £140-160/month per box.

ok its diy livery the hacking is amazing.
there basic diy is £32 pw and then its 98p per hay net so 2x a day and then its shavings on top of that. i think the girl worked it out at 3 bags a week.
there straw bales are £3 per small bale and i thou chavings were better value.
what do i do now?
he would have his own field and the outdoor school is grand.

Can you buy your own hay or do you have to get it from them? 98p for a haynet sounds a bit much to me (perhaps we just have cheap hay, but I'm getting big bales for £15 atm

). 3 lots of shavings a week might be too much as well, so you might not need that much (I use one, but I get that in my livery)

how big are the stables?
3 bales of shavings seem quite a lot, I get through 1 bale a week spring - autumn and about 3 bales per fortnight in the winter, my stable is 12'x12' and the beds certainly aren't sparse

hay seems a lot, how much (weight) is a "net"?
also how big is school, paddocks etc
does the YO do late night checks etc?
does the price include lorry parking (some yards charge extra)??
sorry for all the questions

Any yard is worth what you are willing to pay so if you can afford it and the yard is everything you want then it is worth paying for it.

I think it is expensive.

i am starting to see that. i thought it would be easier to get a price to includ hay and bedding as at my last place in ireland i was always buying bedding.
it is a big haynet and the hay is good quality at the moment.
ive no idea about the lorry space ive not got one so did not ask.
the school is bog standard outdoor school. paddocks are a bigger than my place in ireland. there is someone there most of the time and they will feed etc if i need them too.

i don't think i can really barter the rate can i?
do you think i should shop around for hay and bedding?
i do agree i will not be using a full bed maybe just the back quarter of the stable.

Your first post suggests it's an all in price, the second suggests you pay for the extras on top of the basic as and when you need them? If it's the latter (I suspect it is or you wouldn't have been told the individual prices) and you're not going to be paying the whole amount all year round it doesn't sound too bad. 3 bales of shavings a week does sound a lot, but if you find you only use one or two (or none in the summer and your horse is out) the bills will be smaller. The same for hay - I doubt you will need 2 big haynets every day e.g if your horse is out in a big paddock in the summer. If you pay for these things as you go along it's likely there will be times when it's a lot less that the £240 a month surely?
