I haven't had the vet out to my horse this year :-)

However last tuesday I brought him in and he had cut his leg open on the fence quite badly so called the vet out and got the bill today.

They have charged me £ 26.45 for a visit and £ 27.30 for a consultation. I can't remember if I have paid for both previously ? - I thought the call out charge covered the consultation as he only travelled about 5 miles to get to me so the call out charge would seem pretty high ?

Anyway no stitches but the whole lot cost me £ 127.96 :-/

Yes, sadly it does!

I too pay call out and a consolation fee - £30 for call out, 25 for consultation... more than one problem appears to equal more than one consultation :eek:
 
Wow your lucky! My call out fee is 54 !! And the consultation is always charged seperately. My horse cut his shoulder a few months back which got infected, whole thing came to £185 :/

Thanks everyone ! Guess I will just have to pay up !!:-((

My excess is £ 135 and it always seems to be that whenever I have the vet out it comes in just under which is making me wonder if my insurance is worth it I am paying about £450 a year. Am wondering if I should just pay the money into a seperate bank account and upgrade my BHS memebership to gold ??
 
Hu - Yes I have to pay for both £30 just to drive to the gate then £26+ for consultation plus anything else.

My vet actually suggested to me to take out BHS Gold cover for the liability and to put my monthly insurance allowance into a separate pot and use this to pay any vets fees. He has a few clients that do this and they are on the right side.

I have done this for my two retired mares, but the event horse I have kept insured.
 
Yes this is the norm. The call out fee is for time, petrol, tax, insurance etc. Most practice's call out fees start at approx £20 for the minimum distances.
 
One ambulance ride for you, exclusive of doctor's time and treatment = ~£360
One vet visit to you inclusive of vet's time and treatment = ~£127

My vet charges 'travelling costs - £15.61 if shared' and 'examine equine - £39' before he even starts dispensing medication. That isn't including VAT. And £93 to scan a leg!!
