does this turnout rug exist?

Historically always used Mark Todd rugs on my welsh stallion as they are the only ones that fit his broad frame and cresty neck. However the good old 3 x trigger clip neck cover style ones are no longer being produced and i don't like buying second hand turnout rugs in case they aren't fully waterproof.

so i am in search of:

1200D or more
front fastenings that are the buckle+clip style so i can alter the chest to fit his corners
metal rings in neck line (like Lemieux or Amigo) to attach neck covers via velcro loops.

i absolutely WILL NOT use neck covers that velcro in to the velcro sleeve in neck line like PE or swish so please do not recommend these.

i dont know that this actually exists?! His amigo aussie fits him well but the amigo TO rug doesnt sit how i would like on his neck :( i dont know if the disc front or V clip style from Horseware is better than the T bar ones?

his lemieux stable rug fits ok but the showerproof fly rug has to have a chest extender in to sit properly, its seems like cut really varies from rug to rug even within the same brand which makes it harder still to work out what to try next!

When I bought a horse last year he came with some rugs, One being a Gallop turnout which attached with the 3 rings and clips like the olf Mark Todd ones used too. It also fitted him nicely round his big chest.
It's not a brand I'm familier with so no idea of this is the standard attachment or if it was an older model. I * think it had liner loops at the neck.
Might be worth a look

Out of curiosity why don't you like the Velcro neck attachments? Ive had the swish ones for years on a chunky necked/ shoulder warmblood and they've always lasted and fitted well.

Ah ok I guess it depends on the shape we seemed to have more rubs with the d ring ones than the velcro ones but rugs are all so different on sizing. I've gone from having to find ones roomy enough for my big shouldered ones to finding ones that don't hang off his companion.

I'm pretty sure weatherbeeta was d rings. I don't know if they are still produced but fal were great for our new forest with a very big neck.

Same: Welsh Ds, all huge fronts and frames, particularly the stallion. All tend to carry weight given half a chance.
Firstly, if yours has his mane & forelock, and the typical crest, does he actually need hoods on the rugs?
Secondly, most of the rug hoods are designed with bloodhorses in mind, rarely enough fabric for ours to put their heads down, graze, when fastened up.
Thirdly, you will have more success with combination rugs where the hood is integral to the rug, than anything that clips or zips on.
Fal pro Goliath combo and Fal Pro Viking combo (including the hoods) will be fine - if you can find any brand new, old stock, because they’re no longer made. These are roomy, brilliant rugs, last for years.
Shires Highlander Plus, great, but word of warning, last year they altered the chest clip design and there isn’t the same amount of adjustment as on the previous models. For the combo versions with integral hood, I have taken them to the saddler and had the Velcro changed, to lengths of wide elastic with trigger clips and two small metal fastening loops on the hoods. Didn’t cost much, and this has always proved a piece of cake to deal with.
Good luck

I don't like the velcro strip attachments either (but I tolerate them because Ruggles use them and I like their rugs). I find they attach too well. When you have cold, wet, muddy hands they are really quite hard to undo.
My first Ruggles rug secured the neck with straps through D rings (velcro on the end - but easier to get a grip of it). When they changed to the velcro strip on the neck/rug style I did e-mail them and said I wasn't keen on the new design.

Would this be suitable at all? Only 2 sizing options at the front but really good rugs. The original highlander fits one of mine better than this one but my smaller horse fits these better.

thanks all....sadly the Amigo XL starts at 5'9 and i need 5'6 (so typical!) and the weatherbeeta range is limited with the clip necks (albeit they are deffo now on my list when i replace my MW so thank you for that!!! but cannot see they do a HW version only the velcro style)

combo necks are the absolute worst for him as he needs 5'6 rug with an XL neck so need to buy separately, some combo wont even fasten on him!

I've compromised and gone down the combo route for mine. Shires fit nicely and are quite adjustable. My welsh cob with big shoulders is comfy in them and doesn't get any mane rubbed off.

I don't like the velcro neck attachments either.

I did have a brilliant horseware rug for another cob which fitted perfectly with clips (I always thought it was marks Todd because of the design) but I've just checked and they don't make they same rug anymore.

Ok so Shires have a fabric loop to put a velcro strap through on their rugs. would that work?

You could always get a rug that fits well with the velcro strips and have a rug repair service add the loops to fit whichever hood works best for you.

this may well be my only option!

oooh off to look at these thanks!

That is why you need a truly generous-fitting rug in the first instance! with elasticated clips to close the hood, and if you want to buy pony sized rugs off the shelf, that’s why the customising is needed - manufacturers aren’t catering for this shape.
(think you’ll struggle with Weatherbeeta)

From personal experience: zip / Velcro fastenings on all the rugs with separate hoods have potential to rub at the neckline, especially with a big crest, or blow up and allow water in when the hoods are simply clipped to the main rug.
Hope you get sorted.

Highlander Plus very good, we’ve got a tack room full, but if the horse has a big front - be careful - Shires current version is not as adjustable at the chest as their earlier Highlander Plus have always been.
Again for the stallion, have altered combo hood fastenings to accommodate wide elastic and trigger clips - works beautifully.

Weatherbeeta aren't great on my part bred fell x cob type so I think they'd come up tight for your little stallion.

I was going to say shires highlander but if they've changed the design its annoying.

I've used these before and they have been excellent! I just sometimes struggle to get the sizes I need but they are a good company to deal with ime and my rugs from here have lasted years.

thanks i just cant cope with the patterns, i know thats really stupid and the horses dont care BUT.....i just cannot!

I'm starting to swear by Gallop rugs. My 50g had held up in all this torrential rain and was fab all last year as well. Same as you, i only like buckle and clip front and mine has a deep neck and shoulder so everything i put on her has a tendency to run up her neck leaving her butt out if i can adjust the front.
Mine has 3 clips for the neck but they have just done a new design that is velcro tabs, this might be better as mine with the rings and clips can flap over exposing a bit of neck. They also have a waterproof rating which i've not seen very often on rugs. you will need to size up with Gallops
