Does timing of feeding affect energy?

During an interesting chat with one of the feed companies recently I was advised that if I want to improve energy levels for one of mine I'm feeding/riding her at the wrong time. Ideally she should be fed about 3 hours before her ridden work if I want to see the most benefit from the feed in terms of oomph.

During summer she is only fed once a day which is after riding, so the adviser said although this feed will be providing calories it's doing absolutely nothing in terms of providing energy for work so I'm defeating the object by trying to feed her for oomph.

This does seem to make sense and thinking back it's what I used to do when she was younger and had stacks of energy.

What do we think?

I suppose in theory.
But I feed my horses mostly fibre and slow release feed.
So instead of getting one boost of energy and then a lull.
My horse should have a consistent level of every with no ups and downs.
