Does your dog always wear a collar?

intresting replies!

my dog is black and white, and her neck being white and her collar being red - she has a hint of pink!

not bothered as id rather have a discoloured dog than a dog disappearing with no-one knowing who she belongs to!

the girl who claimed the dog today would have had to pay to get her dog back - if she had a collar and tag she would have got a phonecall from me instead!

Yes, always - whether in the house or out and about. I want it to be as easy as possible for my dogs to be returned to me, so they need to be visibly tagged at all times imo.

I have found two lost dogs in just the last year wandering around near my yard in the pitch black - it was so easy to phone the owners straight away using the info on the tag and both dogs were home and safe within the hour. If they weren't tagged I would have had to call the dog warden, the poor dogs would not have been home for yonks, and their owners would have been tearing their hair out.

ETS - I can imagine that less helpful people than me might come across a wandering tag-less dog and decide that they can't be bothered with the hassle of calling the warden so will instead just turn a blind eye and leave the dog be. Not something I want to chance with my dogs.

No, not in the house or arround the stables. He does when I take him out for a walk though. This is because our friend is a vet and weve heard some horror stories about them being found dead in the morning after somehow hanging them selves on things like door handles, radiator knobs, etc. I know these are probably a million to one chance of it happening but Id never forgive myself.

yes. both chipped but also wear leather collars all the time done up very loose so they can slip out of them easily if caught anywhere. use slip leads when i need to keep them close (for roads, etc.) it gives me peace of mind that if they disappeared, i would hope to get them back quicker as my landline and mobile are on the tag.

Our two wear theirs throughout the day but they are taken off once their day is done as it were and they do not go out again til the morning. Both have ID on their collars and a contact number. We found two dogs wandering last xmas eve the looked totally lost and were very wet and very very col . I thought they must have been dumped (given the time of year) and they were sooo pleased to get in the car. We rang the police, dog warden etc to see if they'd been reported missing. Nothing.

We then rang the Dogs Trust just in case and thankfully just before we rang someone had called in about two dogs matching their descriptions. Turned out they were only from the neighbouring village so we took them back to their very grateful owners. turned out the son of the family had wandered in drunk at 3am, not shut the door and out the dogs had gone. they usually wore collars other than at night! Had those dogs had collars and ID on we would have managed to get them returned soo much quicker! No wonder the poor sods were so cold having been out for that many hours in the snow!

Always when out, never in the house. My garden was staffy proofed and they go out there when I am around so I have no worry about them disappearing. Mine are also both chipped just in case.

yes all my dogs old and the newbie coming always always have a collar and tag (and chipped) for one thing, if they do for whatever, run off, i want to be able, or someone else to be able to, catch them. having the tag etc goes without saying.

my new dog was a stray, with a lead on but not tag or microchip......no calls have been received from the rescue home and i feel somewhat terrible for someone having lost what appears to be a gorgeous dog but thrilled at being able to offer her a safe, loving home......if my dog went missing i would be ringing all the vets / pounds / posters up etc so the collar/tag/chip prevents that.

Nope, only when out on a walk and then it's a half check or full check, the latter usually on the dead link.
They're chipped, tattooed and DNA'd and they are licensed too.
Bored of buying them collars so they can eat them off themselves or each other and I refuse to leave a device which can tighten on them, when they are unattended.

They wear a tag collar pretty much all the time and as they can back out of it, for walks i put on another hound/martingale collar to attach the lead to. I usually take the tag collars off when i'm leaving them at home unsupervised to be on the safe side, as we have dog gates before both exits the chance of them slipping out the door when someone comes in is slim. Both my dogs are tattooed and chipped also.

All in collars since they arrived as pups, unless there is skin irritation (lab!). collars changed if they start to lok grubby/greasy with all tags on. Prefer to have something to grab!

not read all replies

Mine doesnt wear a collar as he hates it. Iv tried to keep one on him but he stresses.
When we are going out he has his harness but never wears anything round the house

Mine wear harnesses with tags on for walking and they wear pretty loose collars with tags when we are not home because they have access to our garden. When we are home they do not wear them. They are all chipped.

You sure about that??

Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, all dogs must wear a collar and identity tag in a public place. The tag must show the owner’s name and address. Dog wardens can enforce this law and fines of up to £5000 can be given by the Courts for an offence

Of course, if the dog is working, it is exempt from the above :).

That's absolutely true, Quirky, but a lot of people don't realise that working dogs are only exempst WHILST they are working - at all other times the law regarding collas/ID applies. The only absolute exemption is packs of hounds.

Pip has two, a soft, rounded, leather collar with a tag on which she wears all the time (except when she has a shower) with tags on it. These tags jingle so helps locate her. And the collar is firstly leather so would hopefully snap if caught and secondly loose enough to back out of it.
Hence the second collar worn on walks with lead attached worn forward of the other so if she does back out of it she doesn't take the tags with her. Also strong enough unlike the leather one to lead off.
And chipped. :D
Belt and braces.

no - the old spangle has one on as he's now walked on an extender lead - iuts also a magnetic collar to help his arthritis - but the other two dont wear one ever - we use slip leads if they need a lead - ie vets etc
they are workers - i didn't realise they still need to wear one if not working - but tbh i wont be putting any one them :o they are microchipped though

On some walks (ie where I know they will end up down a hole and its on private land) no. Its far too dangerous and I have spent hours as a child digging them out. One of my terriers was down a hole for over 7 hours before we got to her and it was terrifying we didn't think we would get to her in time.

On normal walks or in strange places to them they all have collars on. They are all also micro chipped and the deaf one also wears a bell (and has a note on her collar stating that she is deaf) so we can find her if she does go off into the hedge rows. All contact numbers divert to each other if not answered so we know that someone can get through to one of us.

At home no. Again far too dangerous as they have the run of 6 fields full of rabbit holes and thick hedges/ ditches etc. If they got stuck they could be there for hours before I could find them. At least with out I can check out of the window as to their aproximate location and know that if I haven't seen/ heard them for a while I can call and they will start to think about coming back.

They are all very well known in the area but this does have the problem that if a JRT is found we usually end up with it even if its not ours!

Last dog I found had no tag or chip (my vet is fab and will open up at any hour to scan) so I called around (local shops pub etc leaving number in case anyone asked as well as police and dog warden), left notices up all over the place around the area I found her and she was reunited with her owners 48 hours later none the worse for wear... Owners had gone off and not checked she was in before going then asked a local child to let her out and when child got there and saw no dog assumed that they had taken her with them!
