I don't usually post in here - more of a lurker - but would love to know if other dogs "trade" in the same way as mine? He is a year old springer and when he sees you eating something particularly interesting he comes and brings you something, like a toy or a chew stick etc and drops it in front of you then looks pointedly at what you are eating as if to say "I'll give you this if I can have that!" If you give in and give him a piece of whatever it is he wants he leaves with it, happy as anything and you're left with a half-eaten chew or a soggy stuffed toy, a good swap in anyone's book! So, what does your dog "trade" with you?

Yes, I use two balls for recall/speed of recall, exhange items for food etc, it's quite common for our style of training. It's fine for small pups or certain types of dog but if I was doing things over again I would instil the 'you WILL now give me that item, because I told you to' a bit earlier, because I now have a very smart young dog who may or may not come back to me depending on what I might or might not have in my pocket....

Much as I love him mine is not the brightest dog in the world. He does attempt to bring items to us but tends to drop them on route before he reaches you & then searches the floor nearby in a 'where did it go' manner. Then when he does locate said item his joy at finding it makes him forget what he was doing with it in the first place. Have had others that did trades though, both my previous terriers have brought dead rodents to me as gifts, before I return them for the terrier to bury somewhere. Didn't go down well when my last one decided she fancied some of the biscuits someone was eating in the tackroom & brought them a particularly large & not long dead rat to trade! Since then realised with dogs that love everyone it is best to teach them to trade with you only.

The only time i trade with mine is when one of them has found a shoe and decides to run round the garden with it. I go to the doggy biscuit tin and instantly they dash back and drop the shoe, in exchange for the treat.

This way there are no tug of war or chasing them round like a loony games!
