How many people find their farrier brings along his dog(s) when he visits their equines?
If he does are they kept restrained/under control at all times?
This weekend a dog belonging to a farrier was allowed to run free while he shod some horses. This dog got onto a neighbouring farm and had a cat killing frenzy. It's victims included 3 x little kittens and an old, blind cat. The farmers wife and small daughters discovered their broken bodies scattered round the farm yard

OMG thats just awful he will I assume will be liable for this from the farmer...as dog was on his land...poor little kitties how dreadful.
My farrier brings his dog with him but it stays in the van....

that is horrific, the daughters must have been so upset
If my farrier brought a dog like that I wouldn't have him again
(my farrier doesn't bring his dog in the first place, how can he control it whilst shoeing??) if dog was in van that would be fine

OMG That's Awful

My bosses farrier brings his 2 dogs along, they are let out as soon as they arrive and are more or less left to wonder around whilst he shoes the 4 ponies. Boss doesn't mind at all as the dogs seem well socialised, he has no neighbors and the cat is sensible enough to stay out of the way!

Yes my farrier does bring his (tiny) dog but she stays in the car, she doesn't like the YO's German Shepherd. That is terrible!!!!! Poor lil cats. He shouldn't bring one that is a danger

My farrier has brought his dog since a puppy and the dog is always tethered to his van on a long rope.

yes my farrier brings his mastiff along, usually sat in his van and lets him out for a runaround once he has done the horses.

That's awful! What an idiot to just let his dog roam free on a farm! He's lucky the dog wasn't shot.

My farrier doesn't bring his dog with him (can't even remember if he has one, but I'm sure I've seen one in the car in the past), but I'm positive that he wouldn't let it roam free if he did. The dog would be securely in the car.

How awful, what sort of dog would do that. I don't even know if my farrier has a dog tbh, so no dogs when he comes to mine.

Do you know for certain that it was the farrier's dog? Did someone see it do it?

Poor kitties

No, my farrier doesn't bring his dogs with him. But he does sometimes bring his daughter specially to see my little dog

That's awful. Ours bring their dogs, one roams around the yard, but he's well behaved and doesn't wander off. The other keeps his in the van mainly.

yes, I think he made a break for it once but is normally just asleep in the back of the van.

how horrible, my cat stays well out of the way when any dogs are about though he did scratch my aunties dog once and it was a right wimp about it!

Wow thats awful poor cats. Our farrier did have a JRT puppy he used to bring and keep tethered, but it still managed to get stood on and killed. He never brings his dogs now. One farrier on our yard does tho and despite being a lovely dog, it drives me mad as he cr@ps everywhere and is a massive dog....and mine is the only dog on the yard big enough to leave 'presents' that size, so I am sure everyone thinks its my boy! But I don't eve let mine off the lead and always clear up after him - wish farrier would as its a bit revolting finding elephant sized piles of dog poop!

QR.. are you sure it was the farriers dog.. cause that quite an accusation..

My farrier sometimes brings the puppy, but it stays in the van as its scarred of horses.

my farrier brings his dog and she runs anywhere she likes, but i have chickens everywhere, as well as my own 5 dogs, so i ask before i let anyone let a dog run around.
farrier's dog is well behaved, but he had 2 and 1 ran off and got run over a few months ago.

if a visiting dog is a potential killer it shouldn't be allowed out of the van.
poor cats, shame the farmer didn't shoot the bloody dog.

Hi

This is really awful - but can I ask a stupid question? How do you know it was the farrier's dog that killed them? Did anyone see it doing it? It sounds like the farmer found the bodies a while after?

Kerilli - thought you had the same farrier as me then as his 2nd dogs also got run over a few weeks back!

Ours has always let his dogs wander but they have always been very well-behaved friendly dogs. Both have been choc labs and don't wander far from his van at all.

He did bring JRs (his daughter's) but they too just hung around the van or played with our dogs. Sadly both JRs were run over.

I don't mind it at all if the dogs under control - the JRs had fun ratting and rabbiting. Our cat always keeps well out of the way when any strangers or dogs are about anyway so it's not an issue.

I get frustrated with dogs that run wild round the yard. We have a livery yard of approx 42 + horses. As you can imagine we have about six or seven different farriers visiting and some have dogs which are allowed to roam around. Sometimes they just mooch, other times they are a nuisance. We have about 7 dogs on the yard at any one time everyday, plus visiting dogs, dogs that are looked after for parents/friends whilst away on holiday, visiting instructors dogs, vets dogs, plus farrier dogs. Every where you walk is dog poo, dogs chasing cats, walking under horses legs, etc. I love dogs, and have had my own dog which I used to bring to the yard about twice a year but would never dream of her roaming around for more than ten mins each time and then I knew she wasn't the type to run round/chase as she was too old. I find it frustrating when dogs run under my horses legs to chase a cat, or steal carrots from his dinner, or even worse chew his boots/brushes. I think there is a time and a place for everything, and I do not really feel that dogs belong around horses. This is only MHO and I certainly wouldn't want to fall out with friends about it. On the whole most dogs are well behaved, but some are not and the one's that aren't are a total nuisance and annoyance. If dogs can't be left at home on their own then I think that is a training issue tbh. what annoys me more than anything is when you find your hay has been watered by said dogs, or you treat dog poo into your car or house.

mine brings his dog but then again she was named after me!!! she is lovely and no hassle at all and actually does me a favour by getting rid of any rats about!!!!

The farrier the RS uses brings his two terriers, and they can be a bit of a pain running around playfighting with the YO's dog and barking their heads off, but they stay away from the horses and they're very friendly.
