My mare was only shod 3 weeks ago by a new farrier and has lost a shoe already. I can't find the shoe so the farrier is charging £10 to come out and fit one again. Is this a standard charge?

She never lost a shoe with the old farrier (last set stayed on 10 weeks!) and one of her fronts seems clangy already, what am I entitled to in this situation as I can't see her lasting another 2/3 weeks.

Nope! However in all the years I've had mine she's only ever lost one shoe! But he replaced a shoe for a lady at the yard who usually has another farrier (she had the shoe and he was coming out anyway) and charged her 15pounds!!!

I think thats fair actually, he's put himself out for someone who's not even a customer of his - why should he do it for free.

It is a cheek coz if you went to a garage to have a tyre fitted and it fell off, you wouldn't have to pay to have it put back on!!

He only lives round the corner aswell...pah!

My farrier never charges. I think he probably would if it happened regularly though. After Patches lost her first shoe, I turned her out in over reach boots upon his advice....same with Oliver when he lost one. Neither have lost a shoe since.

Don't suppose it's the farrier's fault if your horse treads on a shoe and pulls it off and he is making a special journey to come out to you.

If I have the shoe or it's come off in the field, nope. If he pulls it eventing or I don't have it, then yes, £10. Completely reasonable to me, though it actualyl costs me more like £15 if he pulls it eventing and I can't find it due to studs!

He's pulled a shoe three times in three years, twice on the XC and once in the lorry.

My previous farrier (please note - previous) charged me £10 almost 10 years ago to put a shoe back on when the horse had only been shod the previous day! I had the shoe too. I was totally gobsmacked . . . . .

That is shocking!
My mare's has only come off in the field and the ground is really dry so I can't see how she could have pulled it off, but I suppose it's a possiblity. I shall be interested to find out if he would charge me if I had the shoe.

I think it should depend on how long your horse has had the shoes on for. If it has been less htean a week and he is on the yard anyway than no I don't feel you should pay.

Any longer and he has to vist just for you than yes a small fee should be expected to paid by the owner and if you don't have to pay anything then think yourself lucky.

No never charges... but if he has put himself out ( by coming at weekend or to suit me due to competition) I will always give him a tenner for a pint and his trouble....
After all it does cost a far bit in diesel to get the van out and I think he appreciates it that I am grateful
But, in answer to your question, no he never makes a compulsory charge.

my farrier is worht his weight in gold after yesterday! i paid him £35 danger money for not shoeing my horse lol! well he managed to fit the shoes just not put them on and im saving them for when we have some sedalin

!! doubt he will ask me to pay again just a coffee

A few years ago my farrier charged me £16 to put a shoe on. I thought this was outrageous as I had the shoe, he only had to provide some nails and his expertise. I found another farrier to replace him after that. My current one charges £10 and thats with a new shoe.

Mine doesn't charge as far as I'm aware but then we probably pay him more than enough in shoeing! Also I think he feels responsible if it's come off too soon. Plus, he has come out numerous times to see and re-fit my horse's shoes within a couple of hours of me calling as my horse is prone to getting sore feet and abscesses after shoeing. have to say my farrier is brilliant and doesn't charge for that either! We've (or my mum) have had him for over 20 years mind.

Yes, my old one did. £15 with the old shoe, £20 if a replacement shoe required. And I have a pony who regularly pulls off his off front shoe. In 2 years it's only been that foot.

I've just changed farriers, I don't know what the situation will be with the new one. I would expect to pay something though, £10 sounds very reasonable to me.

Mine charges £15 whether you have the shoe or not!

One of mine lost a shoe a week before he was next due a set & I was charged £15 on the day for the lost one, then he came and put the other 3 on the following week and charged me for the full set!

That said he is very good at timekeeping, usually comes the same day or the next day if one of them has lost a shoe & once even came out on a Sunday morning and replaced one before I went to a show!! Cost me £25 quid that day but it was worth it!

So I try not to complain too much!!

I am obviously alone in thinking that charging to put a shoe back on is completely reasonable, and I am staggered by the number of people who feel it is "cheeky" for someone to expect payment in return of service. If you want to ensure that your horse can't pull a shoe off then don't put a shoe on : otherwise accept that from time to time you will have to ask a member of a highly skilled trade to replace the odd "pulled shoe" and you might have to pay for the privilege.

As far as what you may be "entitled to", I can only imagine you mean some form of fee reduction or recompense, perhaps your farrier may offer you some advice instead, for instance the fact that your horse has the ability to keep shoes on for ten weeks doesn't mean that this necessarily good for his feet.

My old farrier used to charge £5 if you had the shoe and £10 if you didn't but my new one doesn't charge even though I've offered to pay him.
Axel has only lost 2 shoes with my new farrier, but he was pulling them off every 2 weeks with the old one!

My farrier is the best!! well in my eyes anyway!!

He doesn't charge for lost shoes at all! Whether my horse was shod the day before or 5 weeks before!!

See-he really is the best!!
I do supply him with lots of tea and biscuits tho!!
