my horse always does this when he finishes work, especially after a hack, but he wears a loose cavesson (properly fitted) but after reading this blog:

am wondering if he rubs his nose because it has gone numb - what do you think? Is it because they have gone numb or something else?
Actually very interested in this, and do your horses rub their noses?

My little 'rescue' pony does this, I think it's stress related from his early life just like his cribbing & wind sucking! I'm sure it's his way of unwinding.

My 4yr old Welsh Cob does it - assume she has a dribble-itchy mouth!!!

She will also rub her head and neck on the edges of the stable.... doesn't like being hot and sweaty. Me neither.

very interesting, my horse always rubs his nose after a hack, but not when i've schooled him, the only difference being he has a flash on for hacking and very loose cavesson on for schooling. If i'm feeling very brave i might hack without the flash and see if it makes a difference.

My horse rubs each side of his mouth after hacking, he has a loose ring snaffle and a cavasson which is never done up tight. He also rubs the sides of his mouth on the side of his bowl when eating.

Well my horse really does dislike the feeling of a cavesson over her molar teeth which is why she is in a high ring grackle. But of course she can't wear that for dressage and so has the cavesson on for flat work. I'd say I definitely see a difference in the way she works with the 2 nosebands - she is much happier in the grackle and we have much less nose rubbing in the grackle - although she does do it in both to a degree to be fair.

pilfer does this after every bit of work- in his hacking bridle, dressage bridle and jumping bridle.

his cavesson on his hacking bridle is so loose i can fit 2 hands under it so can't really see how it would be causing him harm?

his dressage bridle has a tighter cavesson but loose flash (still rubs his head if worked on the flat without his flash).

his jumping bridle has a grakle and he still rubs with that.

i was more inclined to think he was trying to rub the bars of his mouth where the bit sits as he definitely is rubbing there and not his nostrils/nose.

Both of mine do this. My old boy always has regardless of type of noseband but then he does get a sweaty face so I've always put it down to that. I'm going to have a play around with my new boy to see if he seems more comfortable in different bits/ nosebands.

Always, everytime i rode. It was always on the same leg, with one side first then the other for the same amount, up and down twice. She was in a flash, not tight to be honest and the cavesson part wasnt as tight as it could of been. But it was a chunky noseband and i put it down to her just rubbing because she got abit hot under it.
She never did it once the bridle was off unless she was really hot or had dribbled loads, in the end i think it was just habbit.

Mine does this whatever bridle/bit she has on - it's not her nose that she rubs but more the sides of her mouth which seem to get itchy and foamy. I don't mind her doing it once she has finished work and I certainly wouldn't tell her off for it. The one thing I don't ever allow horses to do is rub their head on me!

Yep Lucky does this al ot. Again its the sides of her mouth, not her nose. She is also just in a looseish cavesson, but I am looking for a grackle to fit her bridle to see if that makes a difference

Yes my horse does, but its the side of his face rather than his nose and its only ever the near side that he rubs on his n/s fore leg.

Mine does the moment I take his bridle off, but he's a mild headshaker also so I think it has something to do with this. He wears a drop noseband with a snaffle and a cavesson on a double, and no noseband at all when lunging - does it with all these on.

Vaya used to do this because she hated being sweaty under her bridle. I never do my nosebands up that tight anyway. Ive never thought of it as tooth pain or being uncomfortable with the bit though as my horses have all been sensitive souls and they would always tell me when being ridden if they werent happy.

hmm very intersting...

Bugsy always rubs his nose after riding, and tries to do it while hackking too

cheeky... its well annoying! and he is in a flash noseband...maybe he is going numb?!

my other two never rub their noses, and they are in loose cavessons...maybe its bugsy's flash that is irritating him?!

im all paranoid my bridle is hurting my boy now!!

Mine always rubs the sides of her mouth on the gate (I tack her up tied to the gate post on the yard as she likes to gawp around). Is the same regardless of whether in grackle, cavesson, flash or indeed no noseband at all !
