If we hack out to the forest and it's bug season (we sometimes get lots of them), then yes, and occasionally even in the arena. Horse does fine, no different than in riding without the mask.
No but I would do, I have bought a proper riding one for my TB who used to really hate flies on his face but its still in the packet due to the fact he injures himself each summer and spends it on box rest so its not been called for!
I have a face net from my previous horse but my current mare has an epic forelock so I haven't had to use it on her they're pretty good, it reduced head shaking and helped him concentrate bless him.
We did try one once, one of the proprietory brands (which I can't even remember the name of) and the blimmin thing just didn't fit, tried two sizes, and still it didn't fit mine. The cob size came up way too small, and the full was way too big
In the week, friend and I get up very early to ride in the summer before work out of the flies - out by about 6.30am.
At the weekend - bit more lazy ..........
Yes, I do use a Cashel Crusader riding fly mask. Much finer than the Crusader field mask I use on him. He is a few spot appaloosa, so hardly any forelock, and he gets eye infections at the drop of a hat so I am always on HIGH ALERT!!!!
The Cashel's are expensive, but I have had mine years, it is fine and it fits well. I suppose he spooks a bit more in it, but he is fairly spooky anyway, and the spooking hasn't been massive enough to put me off using it.
Yes - I ride in the same one my mare wears in the field. She gets very badly bitten in her ears and without them covered she badly tosses her head around and gets very upset - I do keep looking at bridle specific ones but haven't quite gotten round to buying one. She simply doesn't set foot outside her stable without her ears covered in the summer
In summer, yes both mine get ridden in their fly veils. I don't have riding fly veils and paddock fly veils. They can see fine out of the ones they wear 24/7.
Bo has a normal one that covers his eyes and GK has one that extends down his nose due to him having a pink nose that burns easily.
Interesting post, for the first time ever I have mine in masks as opposed to fly fringes, flies are so bad this year I'm considering a bee keepers veil for poo picking for myself.
Anyway, numpty question, but would the mask go over or under the bridle
