something tries to pretend they do!
Had someone yesterday try to tell me that when I'm riding I should be 100% straight in the saddle at all times. So I shouldn't sit to the side slightly when asking for canter, or on bends or circles or even lateral work! to be honest I was kind of gob smacked

thoughts please?

my thoughts are that you should be straight in the saddle but with more weight in the seatbone you need to 'activate' the movement you want. but i do see where you are coming from - teaching grannie to suck eggs etc

But it's my understanding that the 'someone' is right...your bum should always be 100% straight in the saddle so your spine would be directly above horse's....then you weight seatbones depending on the aid you are giving...rather than move your bum from side to side.
Not what you want to hear, sorry.
But on the general point...we horseowners are never short of (unsolicited) advice as this answer proves

That's what I thought too! I have in the past been told to think of it as 'stepping down' into the appropriate stirrup if that helps as a way to think about it.

My hubby used to inform me that i needed more energy when i jumped, it was the first time he had seen me ride and probably the first time he had seen a horse jump!

Hysterical!! I guess it's not just me then that has an OH who suddenly knows absolutely everything about horses and riding!!!!!!!!! They're funny things aren't they?!

yes that's what I meant to say oh great one
smirk.gif
, re the seatbones moving not my bum, but this guy said you shouldn't move at all! Sorry was at work so typing quick
blush.gif

not sure
shocked.gif
he wasn't an instructor by the way
smirk.gif
also tried to tell me all sorts of things about my riding when I was just checking that the saddle wasn't leaning to the left anymore! Like I normally ride looking at the front of the saddle of course
tongue.gif

LOL I was warming up before my lesson yesterday when someone informed me I was cantering wrong - apparantly when cantering you should be leaning forwards in your jumping position at all times..... *sigh*

oh bummer you mean you don't have to sit up straight
shocked.gif
- and I've been trying so hard to sit upright at canter as well
frown.gif
oh well never mind

Tell me about it, OH was watching me lunge George on Sat and said 'really you should make him go slower' which was true as George was having a rush round. So I asked him how, he said I don't know and walked off

Not move at all?! As if you're one of my victims?
Mind you...when I used to ride the eventers out for their 2hrs plus roadwork after a night's drinking (me, not them)....you'd have struggled to see me twitch at all

I used to make my OH lunge my TB whilst I mucked out in the building about 50 ft away from the school...I could always wind him up by saying 'Whoah...and stand' or other commands from inside the building (out of sight) in a normal voice and my horse would completely ignore him and halt or whatever.
Used to drive him mad
