..you come across a mummy & daddy's darling who swears that they love horses & their life is not complete until they have one. Cue mummy & daddy buying the best that money can buy & kitting both horse & rider out in the best kit.

Then 3 months later all interest has worn off & the poor horse is left to stagnate.

Not sure really what prompted this rant but I've seen it quite a few times & it really annoys me!

Anyone else had experience of this & get just as annoyed about it. Or is it just me?!

Its when they are sat on their v expensive pony and shout at mummy to remove or replace rugs _ I cant say what I would like to do with them as the Forum police would have me up before the beak!!

I always satisfy myself that when Mummy and Daddy spoil their precious darlings they will find out the darlings grow into monsters.

What about the parents who ask for private lessons as their little darling is a natural rider and has a lot of talent when they are obnoxious and absolutely bloomin useless!!

more fool their mummy and daddy... i had to beg for a pony for 5 years, and attend my weekly riding lessons in all weathers, before my very doting parents actually believed that it wasn't a passing fad...
i was so desperate for a pony i even went and rode other people's while they were loose in the fields... very very naughty indeed.

It is quite annoying yes, poor horse.
What gets me is that nice riders that work hard and would appreciate a good horse like that never seem to get anything. Or have to work bloody hard to get it. And yet others have it handed to them on a plate and don't appreciate it one bit.

Totally with you Seahorse & Kerilli. I wanted a pony, in fact I was desperate for a pony from the age of 5 up to 10ish when I got my first one & my parents were convinced it wasn't a fad & that I was dedicated enough to look after as my parents made it clear the responsibility would not fall to them.

And yet there was a girl I knew who rode for six months, spent loads of time at the yard. Her parents bought her a pony for her birthday & within 18 months the pony was discarded. He was an absolute doll & yes, she rode him for the first six months but after that she relied on other people & her parents to sort him out. But she didn't want to sell him as she 'loved' him.

It sounds very bitter & twisted I know, but those that would do anything to be in that position never seem to get it handed to them & have to work bloody hard for every horse they get.

The way of the world I guess.

I really wanted a horse or just to ride horses.
I used to sit by the window on car journeys and daydream that I was on my horse the other side of the hedge cantering and jumping all the hedges to keep up with the car.

My little sister was very difficult and a bit of a rebel. When I left home she got Riding lessons to try and steer her energy in a better direction. She ran away to France to go grape picking with Gypsies she is still there now 20 years later.

I got a proper job and started riding at 27 and bought my first 'pony' at 29!

LOL Sidesaddle girl!!! Was the same with my mum (despite her being horsey). Took four years of me doting on my pony and doing all the mucking out etc and getting up at 5.30 to ride before school before she really believed the horsey love was here to stay

artyannie and sidesaddle girl, I so identify with you both! I was 28 when I got my first horse, and six months after I got him, I got a job which meant working away. I decided to put him on loan for a year (hard choice) but my Mum said whay didn't I sell him, and just buy another one in a few years time! She had no concept of him being a part of my life, despite being pathetically doting on her dog!

Pah!

And I still day dream about jumping hedges alongside traintracks and motorways!

People say im one of these people with my horses, i have had 4 over the last 6 years, and im 16 btw. The thing is though i worked soooooooooo hard to convince my parents that this is what i really wanted. Riding lessons over and over and talk talk talk breath horses.

So they bought me a 12.2hh dartmoor pony for £400, which chucked me off every single ride, yet i couldnt get enough of it!
Think that convinced them that nothing was going to change my mind!

but i do agree some kids just say mummy/daddy one day and BOOM next day theres a horse the BOOM 2 months later horse abandoned in the field!

on yeah and i still do the motorway-horse jump thingy even though i have my own!

Agreed, hate it.

Girl at my yard is now 17... has dropped out of college and is working full time. She has a lovely TB type whom she never ever rides. He was stabled 24/7 all winter, her parents would come up and muck him out for her and feed him every day, she rode him about 5 times over the ENTIRE WINTER. The rest of the time he went on the walker every day for 20mins then stood in his box. The 5 times she did ride him she took him in the school and jumped him

Now he is out, she hasn't even been to see him for about 4 weeks. We had to phone her to sort out farrier as his shoes were falling off. Yet we suggest a lovely girl, super rider, keen as mustard with no horse of her own to ride him for her and she won't allow it, spouting some nonsense about him being 'too difficult' for this other girl to manage (and trust me it is nonsense). She won't sell him either as she 'loves him too much'. Bloody disgraceful.

About 2 months ago, she came up dressed in a mini skirt and flip flops, and when she discovered her horse was out in the field for the day (this was just at the end of winter) she asked a member of staff to bring him in for her rather than go out to the field herself, she then left before the member of staff go back with him...

I was nearer 40 when I got my first pony.

I too had to beg for years to get my first horse, I got one on loan and had to cycle to him in all weathers and after 6 months my mum promised that if I did it she would buy him for me, which of course she had to do!!! I hate kids who have no clue whos parents keep buying them ponies, poor animals!!!

it really annoys me when you get little snotty kids at shows who scream at their parents when the pony moves a leg whilst they have been watching people showjumping instead of warming up and you just know they will get about 3 different ponies by the time they are 12

i was mad about horses and it took 7 years of riding lessons and begging to get my mum to get me my first pony

It is annoying but the ones I have seen are still well fed etc even if they are doing nothing. It's more the ones that beg mummy and daddy for a pony and the parents know nothing about the ponies at all and let the kids make all the decisions about welfare, tack etc

There was one at the show today - the poor pony had more metal in its mouth than Jaws from James Bond

it clearly didn't need it and the girl was all 'I need to try this bit now coz he was too strong' when all she needed was a quieter pony to learn to ride on!
