Has any one got a horse that hates dogs? there is one at the yard who would kick chase and trample any dog who gets near it. Is this common?

If my dog gets in the way of gypsy he'll put his ears back and chase her until she's gone under the fence out of harms way. We think it's jelousy because he really likes my dad, yet the dog is always with him if you get me? :)

I think it may be a defence mechanism. If the horse feels threatened, attack is the best means of defence. I have English pointers which the ponies tolerate extremely well. But I also have a GSD who likes to provoke and would heel nip if I didn't stop her. So, the ponies tolerate the pointers but will occasionally chase the GSD!

Yes my horse hates dogs and even cats. He is very protective of his paddock. He kicked the cat shearing the top off her femur resulting in a £1,600 surgey bill for the cat. :(

I sometimes think it's the size of the dogs, we have several dogs on the yard and they tolerate all of them well (they all quite happy for them to be in the stable with them, stand under the horses belly, which freaks me out), but they won't tolerate my friends rather large ridgeback that I bring up to the yard sometimes.
Even the collie that comes up that can be a bit horse reactive and will run at them is tolerated and ignored by most of the horses (he does get told not to when he does it).

Yep mine had one bite his back fetlock and ever since then he will attack any dog bigger than a jack russel. He was always cautious of dogs but after that he will attack didn't help when some moron let her dog chase him and he panicked nearly taking me through a wire fence a few days later.

Hi my dear old irish boy sadly no longer with us absolutely detested dogs. He knocked out a Jack russell by pawing her with his front foot because she dared to go into his stable. If we met dogs out hacking I was always very careful to keep his hind quarters turned away from any dogs. I owned him for 20 years (I got him when he was 8) and had no idea why he had such a problem with them. Sadly it was because of a couple of alsations that he fell on the road aged 28 and damaged both front tendons beyond repair. RIP my lovely chestnut boy

Little Stig HATES dogs with an absolute passion. The smaller they are....the more he wants to kill them (and I really do mean kill them!).
Stranger still he LOVES does like great danes.....perhaps as they are bigger than he is, he doesn't see them in the same light.
One woman who allowed her dog into his field (despite the warnings on the fence) found to her horror, Stig really was dog intollerant when he grabbed it by the back and pinned it to the floor.

Mine is the complete opposite...he LOVES dogs! At home we had 8 dogs on the yard and he used to happily let them sit on his feet, stand under his nose etc. When a new doggie came she spent most the time upright on his stable door because he would constantly give her attention! I would consider trying to get it sorted however, I was very grateful for his love and tolerance of dogs when on a hack yesterday a german shepherd came flying up to us, snarling barking and growling. If he hadnt been as tolerant of dogs this may not have ended well, I am in no doubt the dog would have chased if he had ran.

mine dont mind dogs. My old pony hated them and used to chase them! But he also chased a small child out of his paddock to ;-)
There are a couple on the yard that chase the dogs but not nastily. My JRT has been stood on. Cost £700 to fix her.
They dont like the bigger dogs though, we have a big boxer that bounds around and they pin there ears back and try and bite him as he goes past ;-) silly animals!
