Bruno has had a bit of a funny turn, he was let out just now for last wee/poo and hes come in with a clear gunky liquid coming from his bum. I'm guessing he has an infection in his anal glands and will need them expressing at the vets.
I've cleaned him up for tonight and he will be going to the vets tomorrow for an appointment. He is fine in himself, very lively, eating and drinking well and no scooting on his bum.

How easy is to do anal glands yourself or should it always be a vet job? None of my other dogs ever had problems with their glands so I'm a bit shocked by the his sudden small bum explosion...!

Is there a strong fishy smell? That usually means the anal glands are full. It sounds like his anal glands expressed themselves (when they poo) and if he's not scooting, nipping his back end, and is bright and well in himself I personally wouldn't worry.

My dog has had problems with her glands - not nice! If the gunk was clear though, they are unlikely to be infected. My dog has had a couple of infections and it becomes a pussy cream/light yellow colour with blobs of pus in it. If it was clear and he managed to get rid of it, it probably isn't a problem - just keep an eye out for scooting or nibbling at front paws.

And yes, it's easy enough to drain them yourself if necessary - just not pleasant (but less stressful for my dog who hates visiting the vets).

Since switching to a raw diet, however, the problem seems to have gone away - more bone in the diet is good I think.

ooh Anjo has just finished his course of anti biotics for an infected anal gland! I noticed that he'd started to smell and he'd have dribbling smelly brown blood around his bottom. And sure enough when I went to the vet she said he had an infected anal gland on one side. She flushed it out (the stuff that came out was horrible!! no wonder he'd smelt bad!) and put him on two lots of antibiotics (one lot for normal bacteria and the other for the anaerobic bacteria) and he went back 2/3 times over 10 days or so to have it flushed out and checked.

If your dog has just clear gunky liquid I wouldn't be worried, Anjo sometimes does a squirt of liquid before a poo (like a cat sprunting?) and the vet said its just naturally emptying his anal glands

Hi guys, seems loads better today, not as much coming out of his bum, happy in himself (chasing him round the garden cause he had the sky remote!) eating etc. Will keep on eye on him and if no better will then take him to the vets. I think his glands must have been blocked a little bit cause he did smell and now he doesn't?!

We discovered what was the issue! Bruno ate an entire tub of vaseline! Thats what the gunk was! He is now feeling loads better and is happy as larry!

Omg, that's hilarious if rather worrying! Yuk, that must have been very messy! It's a brilliant poo enabler with the parrafin content!

I thought he was going to die at one point and was all for calling all sorts of emergency services this morning! He apparently has no limit on what he will and won't eat! There were trails of what I now know is vaseline everywhere. His digestive system should be lovely and clean right now....!

It was erm...interesting! All over the garden too, going to have to jet wash that off!
I was up because I had been out and only got in and my other post explains what happened. How is your leg? Why are you up at this time?! :p

It's getting there, just waiting for the hole to close, taking its sweet time. keep waking up at silly o'clock, probably cos I'm not doing enough during the day. The donor site was itching like mad, maybe the hydrocortisone was irritating it

Ouch. There isn't much you can do i suppose in the day time! Start doing some mental arithmetic :P! Would aloe vera be more soothing but are you allowed to use that? Hydrocortisone can be really brutal on poor skin :(
