Yesterday B was turned out and two staffs got in the field, terrorising him and chasing him round. The owners arrived and tried to call the dogs off but they wouldn't come. They chased B for about 15 mins and no one could get close enough to dogs or horse to stop it. B now has bites on his legs AND one on the nose. They are not very deep so I washed them and put antisceptic on them - but should I get a jab or anything for him? And if so, would I send the bill to the dog owners? (one good thing came out of it - B booted one dog across the field and knocked it out - go B!!)

Yes, send them the bill and take pictures of the bites on your horse's legs and nose. And ask the owners to show dogs vaccination papers.
Stupid people who shouldn't have this type of dog

Seems there are quite a few accounts of dog attacking horses on the forum...

Good for B for knocking one out

Put all the antiseptic you want on the bites and go straight to the police and denounce these bloody stupid owners and their dangerous bloody dogs!!!

I would be so angry that I would have found myself a shotgun and blasted them (dogs) to kingdom come. PLease dont 'do nothing', the next time it could be a human being instead of another animal

.
As for your poor horse-dog bites are dirty and painful. I would keep my eye on them and at the first sign of infection-call the vet. Send the bill to the owners and ask for damages too, sometimes hitting peoples pockets is the only way to educate them! Its a pity 'B' didnt kill the dog/s

. Sorry if Im over reacting-today is one of those days!!! Hope your boy gets over it quickly. Mairi.

I agree make sure his tetanus jabs are up to date. Report the incident to the police and or dog wardens because the owners are guilty of not keeping a dog under control at the very least. I'm sure I am correct in this that had that been sheep or other livestock the farmer/owner would have had the right to shoot the dogs if they were causing injury/distress to the animals. Personally I think this should extend to horses as well but that is my view.
Report it you must do that.
The owners should be held responsible.
Yes it could be a child next time but equally it could be another horse or other livestock and they may not fare as well next time.
I would also get a vet to check out the wounds and get photographic evidence of the incident/wounds. Speak to the police or your vet about this.
I hope you get justice served against stupid people like this who lack the competency to handle such powerful and aggressive dogs like that.
I do like Staffies in the right hands but like similar dogs, mastiffs etc they can be lethal in the wrong hands !
sorry rant over and I hope your horse is ok x

Dogs carry a lot of infection in their mouths. I would call vet and maybe get anti bios. Keep washing the wound, twice a day if possible. Nasty dogs

Definitely bill the owner and call the police to record the incident.

You need to photograph the bites, report the incident to the police, call a vet asap and get antibiotics as a precaution. As stated, dog bites are full of bacteria.

If you're getting your gun shoot the owners not the dogs. The dogs dont magic themselves off the leads and the dogs dont improperly train themselves so they wont re-call.

Your poor horses I feel so bad for them, the only ones blameless in this situation are the animals, must say Im glad one of them took a boot - might teach them the lesson their owners should have taught them long ago. Horses=stay away!

Yet again another case of bad ownership. Its a shame the animals bear the brunt on both sides isnt it?

Photograph the bites and report the dog owners to the police. People who cannot control their dogs or let them roam should have them taken away and at the very let I think the owners should pay your vets bill

Definately report them. If it was my husband he WOULD have shot the dogs.

Sounds like the little so and so who chased our horses the other night. That was a staffie that had got out. Our old horse only has sight in one eye, he could easily have gone through a fence onto the road. Our other horse nearly had it but someone was stupid or brave enough to catch hold of the dog!
We did tell the owners of the dog that he had been nasty with the horses, "oh he doesnt like cows either" was all we got.
If i see him loose again i will take him to the kennels if they have to pay to get him back they might keep it in!
I would send the dogs owners your vets bill, make sure both the police and the dog warden knows about it so they know where to go if anyone else has a problem with those dogs.

My mother in laws TB was attacked by a staffie (only one) and the vets thought he was not going to make it for a few days because of the huge tear almost from one shoulder to the other and all the loose skin hanging down, it was horrific! He had over 150 stitches and it cost over £1000 luckily he was insured. The dogs owner just wlked off and left her with a horse gushing blood all over the footpath! Probably thought she was an animal lover as well.

There seems to be something in a staffy that often means they will chase and/or attack horses. I dont know what it is, being a staffy lover myself I was distressed when my rescue staffy tried to attack Murphy - resulting in Murphy striking out and hitting my partner in the back of the shoulder.
Safe to say we did not keep the dog long, as the damage was already done - he hadnt been trained around horses and could have been a danger to other liveries and of course, my own horse.
People who own staffies (and may I add any other breed) but who arent involved with horses should still take a little time to introduce their dogs to horses and all 'strange' things - so little time and effort for possibly a dog/horses life. It simple, responsible dog owners have good dogs. Bad owners are a death sentence to their dogs and the general public.

Cat & I were once attacked by a greyhound out hacking. The man had 3 on leads & one loose & warned me that the loose one would bark at me. So I gave him a VERY wide berth by going onto the field & the dog ran at him & was really trying to bite him. C kicked it, the man (v rough, dodgy type) went mental & I trotted off.

Reported it to the police & they didn't give a cr*p.

Bloody dogs. I ride out with a GSD who is so well behaved. Have met many farm dogs who chase my horse and bite his heels till my GSD puts them in their place! He is my protector!

As others have said, check your tetanus is up to date and keep an eye on the wounds as may need antibiotics. My mare was attacked by a GSD whilst hacking and although the wounds (7 bites) didn't look too bad, they were deeper than they looked. I called the vet to be sure and she was put on a covering dose of antibiotics . The owners of the dog paid the bill, so I took no further action. I did report the incident to the police (as it was on a public bridleway), but they weren't interested, they didn't even take the dogs/owners details, so if it did it again, no one would know it had a history of being vicious.
