Dog attacks horse at show

My horse was attacked by a staffie years ago and sustained bites to his flanks. The dog ended up flying through the air and landing in a heap with a broken jaw after my horse lost his patience with the dogs repeated attempts to bite it and kicked out. The dogs jaw and teeth were broken and the owner was screaming at me saying that I would have to pay for his vets bills. All this happened on a recreational waste ground where I was allowed to ride and the dog was off the lead and out of control. The police later said if I was to see the dog again I should dial 999 immediately and they woudl come out and seize the dog. If it had attacked an infant I dread to think what could have happened. The owner was useless and had no control over his dog.
 
Local YOs have pretty much banned riders from this area for safety reasons. It is a fab facility and local people made a cross country here years ago.

It has got to the stage where you can't even go for a blast in the safety of the arena because there will be a dog on the other side of the fence trying to go for the horse's legs while the owner stands and looks on. And yes we do call out to them, but they usually do nothing.

As the owner of a large, powerful, prey-driven dog who is never off-lead in a public place, it makes me very angry.

A friend and i were hacking when her horse was attacked by a 9month old staff. The lady had it off the lead and it didnt listen to her when called back. It wasnt playing either, it meant to do damage!!!

The lady followed us to the yard and we made it clear (both being staff owners) it would be best to put the pup to sleep. In my experiance, dogs which act like that at such a young age will only get worse. Next time it could be a child.

She listened to our advice and did infact have the dog PTS.
 
I have had to defent myself and my old horse from a dog attack once. I was unfortunately on the ground after coming off. The dog was going mental at my old mare and jumping up at her throat snarling, thankfully it didnt get a bite, but it did get a full force kick from me that sent it flying.

And it was a JRT, not a big dog, but it was seriously demented looking.

Will people ever learn to train and handle their dogs properly?
In my famly,we have all sorts from a yorkie to Great Danes,ALL are safe around small children and any other animal because they are from good stock to start with and raised well.
 
This show has a large "traveller" population living beside the grounds and this is the latest and nastiest incdient with this body of people possessions have been stolen, people threatened. Poor Horse. A really nasty incident for"Amy" too. Hope all is ok
 
I've been chased by dogs several times out hacking, in fact just on Sunday it happened to me on the beach. Fortunately my Horse doesn't bother but I'm sure he would if he were bitten. Way too many people are irresponsible with dogs. I have huskies and they are NEVER off the lead as they would chase Horses (and everything else) but they are worked in harness so get loads of exercise. I do however get loose dogs running up to us, and have even had one tangling itself in the lines, yet the owner blamed ME!!! Erm, how was it my fault??!!
 
yeh i own 2 dogs who are always put on lead when horses around and dogs. most owners just dont care. i was driving the pony on sunday and a motorbike was behind he got silly and to make it worse i was over taking a car parked and biked sped past in tinest gap ever. then i had a dog of lead chase us down road whoofing owner no control. i came back had enough after all this n pony jumping at everything and today dogs again after us im starting to boil up inside with these people
 
The 2 jack russels at the yard are evil nasty dogs, they are sisters and have attacked the yard cat twice plus neigbhors dogs, i dont condone violence against animals in any way but had to beat them and aim full force kicks at there heads to even get them to let go for an instant, last time one was injured friom me kicking it, but owners of dog fully understood the situation and both have been muzzeled full time on yard ever since, the yard cat has since come to live at home with me and my old moggie, she is much happier and thankfully recovered from attack completely,
 
i was out riding the other week on my very docile horse when a st bernard started attacking the horses legs all i could do was kick my horse on, my he really lost the plot and i was worried about starying on as he went mental with fright, had to have the vet out next day as he was really ill and it was all down to the stress of the day before.
I spoke to the owener and he admitted that the dog should be kept in the back garden and not loose out the front, after i found out the dog had attacked many people already, i have now moved yards but still see the dog loose out the front of the house on the road
 
There are 2 ridgebacks that live in a house across the field opposite our yard and they are often running loose in the field.Even when you hack past the garden they get out somewhere along the hedgeline and snap at the horses heels or chase them. Our YO has told the owner her dogs are out causing mayhem but she insists it isn't her dogs. Of course it isn't her dogs cos in a handful of houses in the middle of nowhere every house has a pair of ridgebacks....

oh my god can't believe they tried to say it was your fault! what you meant to say.."no horsey please don't kick the nice little dog whose trying to attack you, bad pony!"

Some people just annoy me. I would be horrified if my dog chased after a horse as its endangering the rider and horses life!!!! This is what horses are evolved to flee from!
 
Out of interest, if a dog started to chase your horse would you stop and allow owner to regain control but risk your horse being bitten OR keep going to try to get out of the way?

just wondered as a lot of dogs have high chase insticts still bred into them and so once that chase stops, they soon get bored and walk off as theres no fun, but if somebody was to keep going or canter away, the dog may chase them and then cause damage as they've got so much adrenaline suddenly fired out of them.

Yes ultimately the owner should have control over their dog, its illegal for them not to.

I only ask as my border collies, when young, used to chase bikes (don't worry this happened twice and are now very much under control, nobody was ever hurt) but as soon as the bike stopped, they would just stand there and wag their tails or go say hello to the person- it was just their instinct to chase and nip (part of inbred herding instict). If the bike continued, the adrenaline would kick in and their insticts come out.
