It seems that with every dog bed I buy the filling goes lumpy after about 6mths and I end up buying a new one. Any recommendations for one that will not do this. I don't mind spending decent money but have been reluctant to shell out on something very expensive so far as I fear it may just do the same.

Definitely the right sort of thing but I wonder if anyone can find me a flatter one without edges. The dog is a lurcher and likes to lay flat on his side with his legs streched out in the warm weather.

They are expensive but will last forever and easy to wash.

I second this. I bought a couple 2 years ago on recommendation from people here and they have been brilliant - still in great nick and no lumps at all. The best thing is you hose them down and don't have to get your washing machine all hairy. :)

I bought a human single bed sized memory foam topper. Much more economical, I have some old curtains cut to fit so just take em off to wash and have 3 beds for £50

Sadly I can't find that there is anyone that sells Bia beds in the UK, but I bought my first Bia bed (have more than one now) for over 20 years ago. I still have it, it is easy to keep clean, definitely no lumps, but a puppy have at some point tasted a little on one of the corners, but nothing a needle and a thread couldn't fix.

Found these photos on the internet:

Well, I went for a Tuffies bed in the end. It arrives very quickly and looks great but the ungrateful lurcher hates it! I think he finds it too hard. He has actually refused to be on it at all and will rather sleep on the floor. Even If I pick him up and put him on it he will get straight off. Has been down for a few days now with no alternative and things haven't improved so it looks like that will be going straight on Ebay! I wonder if I fold a single duvet in half and make my own cover if he will deign to sleep on that?

Alternatively, you could just give up now, buy an old leather sofa and turn it over to him...I have learnt this the hard and expensive way after nearly 20 yrs of lurcher/greyhound ownership :D..all mine turned their long noses up at any number of posh dog beds and patiently waited for me to be trained into realising what they really needed in life!! :D:D:D

If you're going to sell the Tuffie let me know, I was just about to buy another one! My lurcher will only sleep on the memory foam bed (mattress topper from ikea!)

Funnily enough he is not interested in furniture or beds and will happily lie on a hard floor. I think the issue with the new bed is because it is hard he can't comfortably lie hanging off the edge as there is too much of a 'step'.

Did you get a cover for your tuffie?? I have various tuffie beds, but mine flatly refuse to lie on/in them without a cover on the mattress!!!

Have you tried putting it in different places? Judging by my bitches, location can sometimes relate to amount of use.

Depending on its size, have you tried sitting/lying down on it yourself for a long while or slept with it in your bed a night or two? I know this advise probably sounds weird, and it doesn't always work, but again judging by my bitches, they usually refuses to use a new dog bed until it smells like it belongs in the house or have some smell from another family member (e.g. me) on it.

Have you tried to put him on the dog bed and given him gnaw bones? Also something from my bitches, indoors they usually prefer to lie in a dog bed or on a sofa and eat their gnaw bones.

Perhaps he simply prefer/is used to that dog beds should have the sort of filling that becomes lumpy after 6 months, if so, you could try and persevere until he gets used to his new dog bed, try your other idea about a folded duvet, do as milo'n'molly suggested and buy stuff made for human mattrasses and turn it into a dog bed or continue buying dog beds that goes lumpy.
