To preface this, he's at the vets soon so I will be discussing with them. I'm not overly worried or he'd be there today and he's totally normal in himself.

I've been tracking Dobby as he has periods of upset tummies. The diarrhea we've got sorted I think with protein exclusion and worked out what does and doesn't work for him and his weight is back up and settled... Massive win!

I have noticed over the last 6 months and he is sick on day 2 post flyball comps. He's always fine in himself and eats as normal but brings both meals up within 3 hours then back to normal the following day.

He won't eat much on race days outside of rewards in the ring and does get very amped up around the ring but he's totally chilled at the car and away from the ring (I normally have to wake him up to race). He does only have one speed when he's in the ring which is warp speed?‍♀️and he drinks well through the day.

Has anyone else come across anything like this before? Will obviously see what the vet says and will do some trial and error around trying to get him to eat more on the day but the only thing I could think of was an adrenaline come down maybe?

A friend's GSD had ongoing diarrhoea problems, everything was tried , diet exclusions, gardia testing etc , and then she realised it seemed to coincide with training/competitions. She retired from competition and the episodes stopped. This was a bitch who loved her work but had been sold as a youngster as she wasn't reaching the levels required . She did achieve those levels with my friend and never showed any signs of stress when working but it would seem that she was put under undue pressure as a youngster which she never forgot.

ETS not suggesting you are putting him under pressure, I know you wouldn't be, but just that yes it seems competition related stress can cause stomach issues.

More of a musing than anything else - but if it is in the ring stress, would it be worth just entering him and doing runbacks/ box work and not racing him to see how that goes? I'm thinking along the lines of taking young horses to shows to sit in lorries and mooch around looking at things before getting them involved, but if you say he is really chilled while hanging about, perhaps that would be the inbetween step to try and make it all seem like a boring, normal training day and keep the stress down a bit and then maybe pop him back into foundation or find some singles races where he's not getting geed up waiting for his turn?
Otherwise I'd be in the same mindset as you! Not worth the stress, poor boy!

My big GSD would get acidosis 24ish hours after strenuous exercise. I found that bulking out her food with slippery elm powder and feeding her bananas pretty much cured it. She also likes a Rennie's once the gurgling got started. Stress and empty stomachs can cause discomfort. The adrenaline of big exercise seems to trigger quicker digestion or not wanting to eat, who knows !!
