This is a lovely young dog, about a year old, belonging to a slightly distant neighbour. I've not seen the dog out as our walk times don't usually coincide and their house has a private garden. OH and JRT (who has adored him since she first met him when he was a young pup) has come across him a few times, been told the breed, but has promptly forgotten what it was 🤪.

So, about small lab height, long coat, the distinctive curled over tail, and in particular he was chosen as the breed is known for having a calm and amenable temperament. The owners have had various slightly nutty collies in the past, but wanted a steadier dog as they get older, so the calm temperament was key.

Edited on reflection to remove pics. Generic pics from wiki in later post.

Any suggestions, please?

Thanks, all. None of the suggestions seemed to ring a bell with OH, but he remembered that he does have a (possibly old) mobile number for the owners so he's pinged a text across with a friendly enquiry. I'll update if we hear anything back.

Otherwise we'll have to wait until once of us bumps into them out walking again and we can ask them.

He is indeed a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever! Gold stars to all who suggested that! OH had forgotten!

Reply from the owners:-

He's a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever...a Toller for short. Bred to attract ducks to shores to be shot but has a retrievers nature. Not many breeders in this country but lovely dogs.

Edited to remove pics of this particular dog, but these are some generic ones of Tollers taken from wikipedia. They don't seem to have the curled over tail.

How did that text go, so my missus has resorted to asking these random people on the internet with a blurry photo from our cctv can you help 😅😅
It's not quite as random as I made it sound! I've cut him out of the still but OH and JRT were also in that pic, they were just leaving home for a walk and joined them til their ways separated. We do know them a bit, we have lads of the same age and years ago used to share lifts of junior cricketers to and from county training sessions. We always stop and have a chat if we see them out.

Our JRT particularly loves him, and she is very wary of dogs which give out the wrong vibes, but he's just lovely.

This Toller is as calm and easy as he looks. Are there some lines being bred for calm temperament?

He is the first I have seen with such a thick coat and so much white. We have one in our agility training class at the moment and have had a couple previously at club.

Yes that's why I wasn't 100%, he does look bigger and has more white than most tollers I have seen. But breed standards are only an ideal, plenty of room for variation.
