Dog breed suggestions- thinking caps on!

We have a 9 year old cocker spaniel spayed bitch and are thinking of getting a second dog. Does anyone have any breed suggestions at all?
We have a relatively large, contained garden, enjoy walking, I'm at home most of the time apart from shopping etc. We have three sons 5,4 and 1 who are all good with the dog and with all dogs they meet (no pulling, teasing, feeding etc.) I have looked at some rescues who seem to have a policy of not rehoming with children as young as mine so trying to open my mind to different options and breeds. Have tried the kennel club 'find me a dog' but it just suggests everything!

Another spanner? I'm a little fixated and as you know what a cocker is like, go for similar or the same. Saying that, each individual is different, I have three very different springers, but at least you have expectations of a breed you know and can aim for similar.
 
What about a whippet? They tend to be fantastic with small children, don't knock them over or pull on the lead. They love to snuggle somewhere warm but are still game for plenty of walks and outside activities.
 
However silly Pippin was 'gifted' to me so I've never really considered her breed. I like the theme of sticking to what I know. Is there a huge difference between the attitudes of springers and cockers (generally, Pip right now is ignoring her working heritage and sleeping in the sun!) also do they all have a predisposition to wee on you when excited or do I have a special one?
 
i had a cocker spaniel girl who always wee'd with excitement. my other 2 don't :D

If you don't want another spaniel my friend has two golden retrievers. my 2 cockers and her 2 retrievers get on really well. the retrievers are calmer in general but play well all together.
she doesn't understand how I put up with them jumping and running and being around my feet, I don't know how she puts up with opening the door and waiting for her two to stroll out in their own time! :)
they are a great mix if you don't want the same. they go out on long walks together, hers get in any water available if they are allowed and mine run too and fro twice as much but they match each other in terms of exercise
 
Another vote for a labrador. Mine is lovely and very energetic. Think they will get on well with a spaniel and are great family dogs. They may lick you to death though.
 
Working cockers and springers are distinct only through size and were split into two breeds only because of this. My working lines springer is more laid back, trainable and obedient than my pet bred ones. Show cockers look very different to working: which do you have?

My lot are fine once they've been out, happy to slouch round all day.
 
What about a medium sized terrier? We had a soft coated wheaten terrier when our kids were that age, she was delightful. Enjoyed a good walk but didn't need hours. Big enough to jump in the car on its own if muddy. Very pretty coat that doesn't shed - needs combing though. Good at ratting.
 
If not going for another of the same breed why not go for a Cairn terrier.I have kept cairns for 20 yrs. and they have a lovely nature which is my priority in a dog and are great with my grand kids.My present cairn is 13 and got him from the cairn relief society when he was 7yrs. He had been in a much loved home before I got him and as with all rescue dogs it depends on their background.With a small child a rescue dog is probably not ideal,maybe a puppy.?
