Hi, sorry if this has been done before, I didn’t find much on searching for similar situations. Sorry, its a bit long.

We have a hyperactive Cocker spaniel who needs to be kept calm for 6-8 weeks following surgery to pin a broken front leg.
Following the initial surgery we were given ACP which works but I am concerned about giving this long term (effect on kidneys etc). Due to complications he was referred to a specialist and they sent him home with Calmex following further surgery. This doesn’t seem to have much effect, if any. I spoke to the specialist vet who said we could increase the dose (currently 1 capsule every 12 hours). I will be trying this but it’s not readily available local to me (only by internet).

Prior to his accident he had at least 1 hours exercise a day, including time off lead and was still very energetic. Whilst I don’t want to drug him up, especially with anything that may cause other long term issues, I don’t want him jumping about and undoing all the surgeons hard (and expensive!) work. It is also complicated by the fact that I am 34 weeks pregnant and am getting a bit less able to manage his boisterousness.

He is currently fed a mainly Raw diet in the evening with a couple of handfuls of PaH Wainwrights light for breakfast (he isn’t fat but I don’t want him to put weight on whilst exercise is restricted). I have marginally reduced the total amounts. For treats he often has a bone from the butchers (with rations reduced accordingly).

I have had a look for alternatives such as Serene-UM or Zylkene but have found the reviews to be mixed on effectiveness. Does anyone have any other suggestions or a rave review for those already mentioned?
I am taking him to the original vets for a follow up on Wednesday so will obviously ask them too.
A bottle of wine for reading - as I can't drink it at the moment:(

So sorry to hear about your Spaniel, it's so hard to manage an orthopaedic post op dog.

We used Zylkene when our young, mad Labrador was recovering from cruciate surgery earlier this year. It worked very well for her and her pre op exercise habits were much like your spaniel. The insurance paid for it too!

Thanks Flurrydor. Hope your dog has made a good recovery.

As we are thankfully still inside the insurance limit I think what I try next will depend on what the local vets actually stock as that makes the claim easier, provided the side effects are minimal to zero.
From the little bit of reading I have done I'm coming to the conclusion that some things work for some dogs and have no effect on others and we may have to try a few different ones. I'd rather pay myself for something that does the job than insurance money on something that doesn't. Zyklene is certainly next in line to try.

The rack of ribs from the butchers is doing a wonderful job at the moment though:)
