Recommendations for safe dog chews / toys please
I have two Jack Russells both aged 10. I stopped buying Antlers as I think they might have been responsible for causing a couple of loose teeth in one of them.
What do you give?

I am squeamish 😁 I can't do feet of anything, stuff with hair on, gizzards, necks, pizzles or anything smelly. My terrier likes lamb skin plaits. These are quite expensive and I have found some lamb skin twists (I think it was B and M) which are just the right size for him.

Coffee wood has been another he liked, plus coconut fibre plait. These two things have been chewed with enthusiasm and then after a few days just discarded in the garden.

Used to give mine frozen kongs, until they worked out it was quicker to just bite the kong in half! That got expensive very fast so now they only get carrots, do they count?
Never clean their teeth either and have never in decades had any teeth problems apart from the odd damaged canine.

Yes they already have a carrot daily!

No me neither! They can have them outside but not indoors.

I’d like something that lasts a while but doesn’t break their teeth or upset their guts.

Chicken feet are more like snacks than chews. I have some success with just kongs and similar but they’re not super keen. Anything soft enough to not hurt the teeth seems to go immediately with my spaniel. The Poms are much easier a chicken foot lasts 20min+!

Have you tried Himalayan milk chews? Our velociraptor goes through them way too quick these days so I’ve stopped buying them (they’re not cheap, but then, what is 🥲), but a JRT should take a few days to get through one.

Edit to add: on the BBC Sounds app you’ll find an episode of ‘Sliced Bread’ which discusses if dog chews are worth it. Spoiler: they’re not - the experts all say brushing your dogs teeth (with a human toothbrush) is better

Ah but dog chews fill another function in allowing your dog to perform the natural behaviour of chewing which most dogs find calming whilst also protecting your furniture legs from said natural dog behaviour!

Goat or deer legs. Mine have benebones but they’re probably as hard as antlers, which I stopped getting after Bear lost a tooth.
That was another thing I learnt from the radio thing - if your thumb nail can’t make an indent in it, don’t give it to your dog (their teeth are softer than ours apparently, which I was very surprised to learn - it’s the jaw which is stronger)

Indeed - but I think they’re saying you don’t necessarily need expensive stuff sold as dental chews for that, because they don’t work as well as a brush anyway
Spare animal parts here all the way. They only get dental chews when my sister's dog stays, because my sister bring them.

One of mine loves yak chews, the other smaller one does not. Again, tho, they’re pretty damn hard!

I gave up with the yak milk chews. Ivy cronches off big chunks from them instead of slowly chewing/licking to soften it down.

ETA or she ignores them. No in between!

Pizzles although they are yuk (summer outdoors only treats!) and pigs ears are favourites here for Ivy. Annoyingly she won't go for fish skin stuff as it's supposed to be very good for teeth.

I’m struggling with one of my Chihuahuas as she has never been a chewer, and her teeth are not looking great. Other dog loves chews and his teeth are great. If I give them both something she just guards hers, hides it and then the other one gets it.
Is tooth powder any good? Or should I try something else e.g carrots? Both have tiny mouths, so brushing would be tricky, if they even allowed it!
