Dog/Child story of a different kind. "Brave Dog Died To Save Children"

awww that poor wee mite and the poor kids too.very sad.

i agree with this-
All dogs must be neutered (and by dogs I mean both boys and girls )
Must be microchipped
Must be kept on a lead when out
Must be kept behind secure fencing at home
Any dog caught roaming will be held and the owner will be fined

my OHs mums dog is a rotty-he is as soft as a brush but a big powerful dog.he is never let off the lead- he could injure a child just being friendly never mind if they poked him in the eye or annoyed him! and he has had the chop.he is let out in a secure yard at home.
its sad to say certain powerful breeds (that have prehaps more of a killer instinct due to their breeding) attract certain people into having one.and not controlling/training it wrongly as they want it aggressive and powerful.
i think its only sensible to have your animal on a lead in public-after all you wouldnt let your horse or small child wander about in public as they have no sense!

Hi Amandaco2,

At 1st glance, i thought someone was suggesting that all dogs' owners need to comply to these (to my mind, a little strict, if not draconian) rules. Then i read meandmyself's posts again, and it's so easy for things to change perspectives..

I totally agree with your approach with your Rotty, who's probably a very lovely, kind lad. My old Mum's fave breed was a Rotty! I've a friend with a Rotty, loads of us go walking, she's loose, as are our other dogs.

But i used to have a lovely collie bitch. Prettiest, daintiest, nicest collie lady you could ever meet.

Until the day she met a Rotty. She didn't like him, was the message. So she rounded him up, + showed her teeth! We were on a (private) path (naughty!) + neither the Rotty's owner or myself expected to meet anyone.

He ran off. (The Rotty, not the owner!! Owner laughed!!)

I think the point i'm making, is that most dogs, despite their breed, are capable of very good behaviour, in the right hands, but they are individuals, also. (So please my i apologise for my much-loved old collie's behaviour, many moons ago?)

I couldn't agree more that specific breeds are bred for specific purposes. But whatever is bred, is open to good training, within the limits of the breed. (By 'breed', i think i'm also referring to the breeders/owners!)

I'm still upset about George, and sincerely hope the owners of the Pitt-bulls in question are taken to task by the law, for not training their dogs to be safe. At the end of the day, they're a breed which man has developed for fighting. We can't blame the dogs, is what i'm trying to say. But i'd like the Pitt Bull owners to be taken to task in this case.

But we can blame the people who breed aggression into our dog lines in the first place, surely?

Wishing all doggie friends well,
with my very best wishes, BS x

yes people should have a dog either as a pet or as a working dog.
not some trophy to show off with and act 'hard'

one of my friends had two alsations and he kept them to guard the house.because of their training he always kept them on a lead if out in public and only took one at a time/per person as they were trained to be protective.he couldnt have them as guard dogs and as pets.

its not the breeds fault more the idiots that have bred/trained them!

These discussions always become a "I love my Staffy's, they're the kindest dogs" usually followed with a photo of a pit with a young child.

Stallions are best owned by people who can handle them...they can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

I would rather see the breeds banned, than abused, or banging their heads on kennel walls in sheer frustration, because they have been given up, once out of control and unsocialised, never or rarely to be secured another home.

Exactly!

It is the same with any breed that the owners don't understand - Spaniels because they are too full of energy, Collies because they are too clever etc etc. - It just so happens that when these type of dogs get out of control, they can do serious damage to people.

As per usual it is a few numpties spoiling it for everyone else!
